| Literary stylistics,a new discipline based on linguistics and literary criticism,explores the aesthetic value of literary works by analyzing the linguistic patterns of literary texts.Nowadays,it has become one of the important perspectives in the study of literary translation.It can improve the translators’ sensitivity to the aesthetic function of linguistic form and help them achieve functional equivalence.Foregrounding is motivated prominence deviated from norm,which aims to highlight the theme and increase the artistic effect.It is one of important tools of literary creation and the main object of stylistic analysis.Therefore,foregrounding is a key part of literary translation.With the method of comparative study of “Chinese-English” cases,this thesis probes into Goldblatt’s translation strategies and methods for translating foregrounded language in the target text from the perspective of literary stylistics and makes a brief analysis of some special cases.This thesis aims to demonstrate the practicality and operability of foregrounding in the translation of novel literature.Tanxiang Xing is a tragic novel which tells about the resistance against German invasion led by Sun Bing,a Shandong hero in the late Qing Dynasty.This novel has covered almost all types of foregrounding devices,enhancing the sense of humor and irony which not only attracts the readers’ attention,but also provokes deep thinking.Goldblatt mainly adopts the following two translation strategies: the foreignization strategy is used to preserve the original foregrounded language while the domestication strategy is used to omit the foregrounding effect.Under the guidance of foreignization,he applies three methods,namely literal translation,transliteration and adjustment.Here,adjustment is a new translation method for translating foregrounding,which needs to shift from one foregrounding device to another.By this means,only a part of the foregrounding effect can be retained.In paradigmatic foregrounding,semantic deviation,graphological deviation and grammatical deviation can be reproduced by literal translation method.In some cases,lexical deviation and the deviation of historical period can be achieved by adjustment.The translation strategies for phonological deviation and dialectal deviation are influenced by many factors such as cultural background and linguistic system.In syntagmatic foregrounding,repetition is much easier to be preserved by literal translation than parallel structure.Given that foregrounding can display the artful linguistic design and cultural deposits,translators are suggested to use foreignization strategy to reproduce the foregrounded language so that the target-language readers may well appreciate the unique style and aesthetic value of the source text. |
