English reading is an essential ability of students in colleges and universities. However, poor reading ability is often a big obstacle for English learners to improve their English ability and a big problem in dealing with CET-4 and CET-6.Metacognitive strategy refers to the strategy that students effectively plan, monitor and evaluate their own cognitive process and results.According to previous research results of some scholars in this field, metacognitive strategies and English reading competence are related. However, there are few studies linking the two within the context of MOOCs(Massive Open Online Courses)to explore the effective way to promote the metacognitive strategy. In this study,118 non-English major freshmen in Hebei Software Institute are taken as the research participants. The data were obtained by using the questionnaires, the CET-4 reading test and interview with students.Based on the statistical analysis of relevant data, the major findings of the study are summarized as follows:1.The characteristics of vocational college non-English students in the application of metacognitive strategies are as follows: attention strategy is used most, followed by monitoring strategy and evaluation strategy, with the lowest utilization rate of planning strategy.2.There are obvious differences in metacognitive strategy use between high-level and low-level groups.3.There is a significant correlation between students' English reading achievement and metacognitive strategy use.4.MOOCs have a positive effect on metacognitive strategy application. The time setting, theme background, title setting, pictures and videos, test setting and other factors contribute to the use of metacognitive strategies. The introduction of excellent MOOCs resources into teaching transforms the traditional way of learning and breaks through the limitation of time and space, which plays an indispensable role in promoting the development of students' reading ability. The author hopes to make some contributions to enrich relevant research on learning strategies at the theoretical level, draw teachers' attention to the influence of MOOCs resources on students' metacognitive strategies, and propose practical and effective methods for students to improve their reading strategies and abilities in the MOOCs context.
