A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is a semi-autobiographical bildungsroman of James Joyce.The novel takes a third place in Random House's 100 Best English-Language Novels of the 20th Century ranking in 1998.This is Joyce's first experimental novel with a worldwide influence.He consciously used different linguistic features to describe different life stages of the protagonist,which became a distinctive language style of the novel.This paper focuses on the Chinese translation of various linguistic features in different life stages of the protagonistIn addition to the introduction and conclusion,the body of this paper will be divided into three chaptersThe first chapter discusses the linguistic features of Stephen's childhood and their translation.Joyce depicted a child who expresses immaturely and impotently and thinks simply and incoherently through different types of repetition.Based on examples,this chapter analyses the gains and losses of the reproduction of Stephen's childishness in the Chinese translations and comes to conclusion that translators should try to stick to the original ways of repetitionThe second chapter focuses on Stephen's linguistic features in his boyhood and their translation.The writer used many rhetorical skills which make Stephen's language more complex.He now gets rid of the inability of expression.There are obvious changes of his language features compared with the previous stage Translators should take the same rhetorical skills to reproduce the style and aesthetic values of the original text and show Stephen's growthThe third chapter focuses on Stephen's linguistic features in his youth and their translation.At this stage,his expression has diversified features and his love of art and beauty urges him to write a poem.Translations should faithfully convey the aesthetic values of each different linguistic feature.Translators' grasp of different language styles determines whether the image of the young artist can be reproduced truthfully.
