There are many related researches on autonomy in language learning,but the study of Chinese autonomy in learning has started relatively late in the field of Chinese teaching.The research results are not abundant,and the study of autonomy in vocabulary is not involved.Vocabulary is the building material of language.Vocabulary learning is a very important part of Chinese learning.Studying the vocabulary autonomous learning ability of intermediate and advanced learners can provide reference opinions for Chinese vocabulary learning and teaching.This article synthesizes the previous research results,gives a conceptual definition of the vocabulary autonomous learning ability,and proposes a framework for the ability.On this basis,a questionnaire for autonomous learning of vocabulary was prepared to investigate the cognitive status of vocabulary autonomous learning ability of intermediate and advanced learners.After that,we select learners with higher vocabulary level as case studies.Through classroom observation,interviews and other research methods,we obtain learners ’vocabulary study notes,describe the specific performance of intermediate and advanced learners’ vocabulary autonomous learning ability,and differences in the ability of autonomous learning of vocabulary between intermediate Chinese learners and advanced Chinese learners.The study found that,first,in general,intermediate and advanced Chinese learners have the deepest awareness of the cognitive dimension of vocabulary autonomous learning ability,followed by the behavior dimension,and the lowest level of awareness of the monitoring dimension.Secondly,intermediate Chinese learners and advanced Chinese learners have significant differences in the four elements of cognition of Chinese vocabulary,solving vocabulary learning problems,monitoring vocabulary learning process,and monitoring vocabulary learning strategies.In the case study,we found that the consistency of cognition and solving vocabulary learning problems of intermediate Chinese learners is higher than that of advanced Chinese learners.In the implementation of vocabulary learning strategies,intermediate Chinese learners use a singularity in presenting strategies,and advanced Chinese learners present a trend of diversification.In terms of self-monitoring of vocabulary learning,intermediate and advanced Chinese learners can well monitor the formulation and implementation of vocabulary learning plans,while the focus of monitoring vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary learning effects is inconsistent.Finally,this study further explores the source of learner vocabulary learning strategies,summarizes the shortcomings of selfmonitoring of vocabulary learning,analyzes the correlation between language level,learning motivation and vocabulary autonomous learning ability,and gives the intermediate and advanced Chinese learners’ vocabulary autonomous learning ability Training suggestions.
