The characteristics of the people of Huizhou were imprinted on Huang Pin-hung early on.His long life can be divided into two parts. In the first half of his life,he studied for the imperial examinations, worked as a squire, teacher, clerk, and participated in the democratic revolution in his hometown. In the latter half of his life,he was mainly engaged in fine arts education, writing, carrying forward Chinese studies, and inspiring the people. He longed for the life attitude of the ancient hermits, but tried hard to devote himself to the cause of saving the homeland with culture. He was deeply influenced by the traditional culture of Eastern Zhejiang and Gushe County and the cultural temperament and feelings of the distinguished men.He did not be changed by the environment when later living in Shanghai. As a Confucian cultural person who loved his hometown and had historical consciousness,he combined the Confucianism’s persistent spirit with the Taoist’s flexibility, and he stubbornly believed in "Zhizhiyiwen",and used healthy, simple, and honest "Neimei" art as the specific medicine to awaken people’s hearts.Huang Pin-hung’s father, family education and enlightenment education in his hometown were the beginning of his painting life. The young man’s rich experience of traveling to famous mountains and rivers made him have a deeper affection for the landscape of his country. He got a good view of the ancient books and paintings of the painters of Xin’an and Huangshan schools of painting and used them in his own works.Huang Pin-hung’s paintings exemplified not only his civilian learning and painting theories, but also the characteristics of that era.His brushwork is complicated and the ink color is thick, which seems to show the background of the chaotic world in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. The brushwork and ink color look old and clumsy, but they are the appearance of his current mental image. He compared the reluctant and natural process of learning from the ancients and nature to the cocooning of butterflies, which sublimated from the traditional culture and native land.He returned the abstract brushstrokes fromthe landscape to Zhao back to nature, making the form and meaning fit together. His landscape paintings have a sculptural solidity and architectural-like structural mechanism of expression. It seems that the smell of grass, wood, stones and houses in the hometown can be smelled. The growth and development of a person is based on the original environment where he grew up.Huang Pin-hung’s painting theory was also based on the enlightenment education which he received from his scholar-merchants clans in Huizhou, and was summed up by his own practice and experience after being influenced by the theories of Xin’an and Huangshan schools. After Huang Pin-hung left his hometown,he often missed his homeland and took action to save the villagers when his clans facing an existential crisis.Huang Pin-hung’s feelings about his hometown Huizhou are also expressed on the paper.During his life,he traveled to the Huangshan Mountain and the West Lake many times. The ancients just appreciated the scene of mountains and rivers and remained them in their mind. However, every time Huang Pin-hung visited or even revisited the same place,he definitely painted the scenery.Huang Binhong had accumulated a large number of travel paintings of Huizhou landscape in his life, such as "Huangshan Tour Painting Album","Eastern Zhejiang Poetry and Painting Album " and "Zhejing and Jiangxi Tour Painting Album".In the end of his life,Huang Pin-hung chose to return to his hometown he misses deeply,"Wish to be an old painter by the West Lake."...
