Translation Of English Subjects Under The Guidance Of Translation Shift Theory

This translation practice report is based on the author's translation practice on Belgium: From the Roman Invasion to the Present Day(excerpted)published by the Belgian scholar Emile Leon Cammaerts in 1921.The book focuses on Belgium,at the crossroads of Europe,which witnesses the rise and fall of various ethnic cultures.In this translation practice,the author translated the first 10 chapters.In the process of translation,the most representative problem the author encountered is that the subject of the original sentences was not properly handled,resulting in the unreasonable structure of the translated sentences not in line with Chinese habits.To solve this problem,the author sought theoretical guidance and finally chose Catford's translation shift theory,which is divided into level shifts and category shifts.After a thorough understanding of the theory,under its guidance,the problem of how to deal with the subject of the original sentence has been properly solved by combining the differences between English and Chinese subjects.Therefore,this translation practice is carried out under the guidance of Catford's translation shift theory.The translation practice report consists of five parts.The first part is an overview of the translation task,which makes a brief introduction to the translation task and mentions the significance of the translation practice.The second part is the translation process,which describes the author's translation process from the aspects of preparation,translation and proofreading.The third part introduces Catford's translation shift theory,including the domestic and foreign research.The fourth part mainly illustrates the shifts of sentence subjects in the original text by applying Catford's translation shift theory when translating Belgium: From the Roman Invasion to the Present Day.The last part is practice summary.The author hopes that the methods of translating the subject of English sentences will be of some help to the readers of this practical report.
