Abstract/Summary:
As a literary form, the novel is favored by readers, and the detective novels among them are sought after for their rich connotations, vivid plots and wonderful descriptions.Detective novels are imported from foreign countries and appeared in front of us in the form of translation at the beginning. The earliest novel is the Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes. One of the important characteristics of detective novels is that the dialogue between characters is relatively long. The author highlights the character image, describes the occurrence of cases and the detective reasoning process through the dialogue between characters, and often enriches the character image through the dialogue between some implied meanings. The Theory of conversational implicature was first proposed by the American philosopher Grice and is also called Grice Criterion.Grice believes that in order to achieve a specific goal in all language communication, there is a tacit understanding between the speaker and the hearer,a principle that both parties should abide by.He calls this principle the Cooperative Principle of Conversation. The proposal of the Cooperative Principle marks the formation of the Theory of Conversational Implicature.Conversational implicature that abides by the principle of cooperation is classified as general conversational implicature, but sometimes speakers deliberately violate the principle of cooperation to convey their own special conversational implicature. The derivation of special meaning can be summarized as follows: discourse → violation of norms → evaluation →context → special meaning. From this,it can be seen that the derivation of special meaning needs to be based on specific context and conversational meaning.Based on the translation practice of detective story Strangers on a Train, this paper analyzes the specific meaning of the dialogue that conveys special conversational implicature(i.e.violates the principle of cooperation),further compares and analyzes the different methods of translation, and selects thebest translation method. This practical report summarizes several cases of violation of the cooperative principle in the dialogue between fictional characters, and sums up the differences in different treatment methods of the translation under relevant circumstances. It shows the guiding significance of conversational implicature theory to the translation of fictional characters’ dialogue, which is helpful to the translation work in the future.
