| In recent years, with the increasingly prominent global environmental problems, system construction has become a hot issue in the field of global environment and sustainable development. The existing international environmental system inevitably exposes many shortcomings and deficiencies, which makes it difficult to adapt to the requirements of the new situation. The development and reform of the international environmental system is an arduous and complex task, which is a process of continuous promotion and exploration in practice. The source text is Evolution of International Environmental Regimes, written by Simone Schiele,a junior professional officer for the Science,Assessment and Monitoring Unit of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity(SCBD).As a popular science book, the author examines and studies the development of international environmental system from a legal perspective and probes into the development of international climate system. The author also establishes a theoretical framework based on general international law,so that readers can have a deeper understanding of international law,and provides more references for the formulation of international environmental system. This popular science book is an informative text. The author analyzes the characteristics of this kind of text and summarizes three problems encountered in translation: the first is how to translate words with no corresponding Chinese meaning and how to translate polysemous words;the second is how to translate long and complex sentences;and the third is how to make the translation acceptable to readers. It could be found that the understanding and expression of words, sentences and even the whole text in translation practice are inseparable from the analysis of register features, which are all developed around three variables: field, mode and tenor.Under the guidance of register theory, the author analyzes the problems from three aspects respectively and puts forward corresponding solutions: The first lexical problem should be dealt with from the perspective of field. The translation of words in popular science texts should conform to the field characteristics of the original text, and wordswithout corresponding Chinese meaning should be translated through literal translation or free translation followed by original words. The second syntactic problem is solved from the perspective of mode.It deals with translating long sentences. In order to clarify the logic in sentences, the author adopts the following methods: syntactic linearity, division, adding personal pronouns or demonstrative pronouns, using dashes or colons in order to maintain the mode of the original text. The third textual problem is to deal with from the perspective of tenor. The translator should use vague words and personal pronouns accurately and correctly, and the sentences should be formal and not obscure so that make the translation acceptable to the readers. It is hoped that this report can provide references for future translations of popular science texts, and enhance people’s awareness of environmental protection. |
