| Lady Chatterley’s Lover is the most controversial novel of D.H.Lawrence.Since the publication of this novel, critics have analyzed it from the perspectives of writing techniques, feminism, psychoanalysis and comparison, etc.,while few scholars analyze it from spatial perspective. In addition, many works reflect Lawrence’s theme of pursuing harmony, and few explore Lawrence’s way to pursue the state of harmony. This thesis tries to use Gabriel Zoran’s spatial theory to interpret this novel from three levels, the topographical level, the chronotopic level and the textual level. From the perspective of the topographical level,we can see various constraints in the manor and the coal mining town, which form a striking contrast with the woods without any constraint, which reflects the ideal place pursued by Lawrence. From the perspective of the chronotopic level, some important events make the relationship between the characters and the topographical space either intimate or alienated. And these events affect the structure of chronotopic level and lead to different endings of the characters. From the perspective of the textual level,we can see that Lawrence constructs the texts to show that even if each space is full of constraints, people still pursue their own life in their own way, reflecting the wills of the characters to get rid of the constraints in the space.Lawrence makes use of space to reflect the phenomena that people are bounded by the traditional concepts, class barriers and family relationships and hopes to achieve the goal of pursuing and exploring the way to obtain the ideal living space of mankind by breaking through the constraints of spaces. |
