With China's fast development and increasingly frequent foreign exchange,a large number of qualified translation talents are needed.Over the years,China's colleges and universities shoulder the responsibility of cultivating translation talents. However, the main translation teaching activities are usually confined to English majors, the translation teaching of non-English majors who are the absolute majorities of college students in China is neglected. At the same time, many people hold the opinion that translation need not be learnt.Anyone can translate if he learns a foreign language. The research first investigates the present situation of college English translation teaching through questionnaire survey in Baoding University. Then, the author analyzes students' English scores in college entrance examination by means of SPSS 20.0.Eighty freshmen in two parallel classes are chosen to take part in a teaching experiment. One class is taken randomly as experimental class, the other control class. The experiment lasts a semester from September 2018 to January 2019.In daily teaching, the method of incorporating translation teaching into reading course is adopted in the experimental class, while only reading is taught in the control class. The two classes take a pre-test and a post-test separately before and after the teaching experiment and the data collected are analyzed by SPSS 20.0.The results of analysis show that there is no significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test in the translation ability of the control class, while the translation competence of the experimental class in the post-test is significantly different from that in the pre-test.This shows that learning translation and not learning translation are quite different.and it is quite necessary to incorporate translation teaching into reading course.Limited by teacher-student ratio and other factors,it is almost impossible for many colleges and universities, particularly local colleges to add special translation class hours for non-English majors. Therefore, this is a practical and feasible method to make up the ignorance oftranslation ability development in non-English majors' teaching.
