The Dialogue Between Light And Space

Light as the object for the artistic expression since antiquity,and there are many artworks expressing light throughout human history.But it is until much later when light plays a role of pivotal material to form artworks.From western modernist art to today,the forms and boundaries of sculpture has been expanded in a huge range,hens more and more materials can be considered to achieve a sculpture.Light and sculpture have a close tie,for the reason of light has always playing the role of “making objects be seen”,as the traditional sculpture always needed,light turns into a special artistic language of sculpture naturally,and this phenomenon is getting more and more universalized due to the developments of scientific technologies.In general terms,artworks are held by space,especially for those works that need occupying space themself to fulfill their aesthetic meanings,in that case,space becomes a part of those works.When light as a relatively shapeless form becomes the key material that forms an artwork,it shows its special substantivity,diffusion effect on visual level,and its incorporeity on tactile level comparisons with other materials that have mass,all of which makes light mingle and reshape the space more thoroughly,and makes it a powerful tool for the space construction,especially for atmosphere generating and space shaping.Many light artworks transform the space into abnormal state by virtue of the characters that the above-mentioned,challenging people's existing experiences and bringing them strange feelings.Theses feelings will lead to conflict of one's inner experience world,and it is a sense of separation,a sense of out of control,it is a feeling that drags one's mind from a safe zone to the realm outside the border of the experience world.It gives people straight impact on their mind using perceptual form rather than arouse something by interpretive symbols and connotational preaching,in this way,people can generate deep thinking autonomously.This paper focuses on the study of the aesthetic experience caused by using light as the main artistic language to participate in the constructing of space and make the space transcend the normal state,studies and analyzes its value through representative works of artists in the history of fine arts and my own practice under the same subject.This paper is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is divided into three sections,which respectively introduce the origin of the research,the research status inside our country and abroad,and the innovation points of this paper.The second chapter is divided into three sections.First,a brief review is made from the history of the dialogue between light and space.Then,what is the state of the space and how does light affect it will be explained.The third chapter is also divided into three sections,which first introduces the unusual ways of light participating in constructing space,then introduces the aesthetic experience within and outside the existing experiences,and finally discusses and analyzes the aesthetic values of experiences outside those existing ones.And this chapter will be supplemented by the analysis of many artists' works.The fourth chapter is divided into three sections to talk about the light installation of my own,and the plan for my graduation final work.The fifth chapter is a summary of the full text.
