China has five thousand years of history, and the Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)culture and witchcraft culture are rooted in this land, becoming vital parts in ancient and even contemporary Chinese culture.Because the gene of witchcraft is hidden in the culture of TCM,it is not only the distinctive feature which makes TCM different from Western medicine, but also the theoretical obstacle that hinders TCM's future development. Therefore, the author selects the book Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)out of the Jungle of Witchcraft(Excerpts)to conduct translation practice, and write relevant report based on the difficulties encountered in the practice, aiming at enrich research results of the Skopos Theory in the translation of medical classics and promote the publicity of TCM culture overseas. The author selects the first section of the second chapter of the book as the source text, and takes “the Skopos theory” created by German translators as the theoretical guidance, analyzes a large number of translation cases from the vocabulary and syntactic level, aiming to explore the guiding role of the principle of “faithful” and “coherent” in the translation practice of medical and medical history texts. After analyzing and summarizing the difficulties encountered in the process of translation practice, the author chooses jargon of TCM and wizardry, names of the classics, and culture loaded-words to discuss vocabulary translation. The author uses multiple ways to translate, including naturalization strategy, such as: Interpretation,Synthetic Method,Imitation and Corresponding Translation, and alienation strategy: Transliteration,Literal Translation,Free Translation and Annotation. At the syntactic level, there are huge differences between Chinese and English grammar. Therefore, when translating sentence with no subject, translators can use methods like cutting into short sentences, adding subjects and transforming into Non-finite Verbs to extract the logical relationship within the text, distinguish the principal and subordinate sentences, cut the source paragraph into short segments, add omitted components and re-integrated into sentences. And translation of “bamboo sentence” can be achieved through Syntactic Linearity, adding Conjunctive Words and cutting into short sentences, which will transform loose Chinese sentences into logical and vivid English sentences.According to the report, naturalization strategies can enhance the acceptability of translations, while alienation strategies canpreserve the exotic nature of the original text, and translators need to adjust the strategy in a timely manner according to different purposes and needs,in order to achieve a subtle balance between “loyalty” to the original text and the “coherence” of the translation. However, with the acceleration of the process of Chinese culture's external communication, retaining certain heterogeneous characteristics will help to achieve the goal of cultural communication.Chinese medicine terminology English translation and the dissemination of TCM culture are difficult in the translation of medical text.In the process of this translation practice, the author seeks diversified translation methods and achieves balances between the principles of“faithful” and “coherent”,for the purpose of cultural dissemination and forming a TCM culture-related translation version with exotic characteristics, enrich the results of English translation of medical classics and Chinese medical history text which will provide reference for others' researches, promote TCM culture and tell a good story of TCM.
