A Report On C-E Translation Of The Excerpts From Paintings Through The Ages In Hunan Province ?:comprehensive Volume

Huxiang painting art has a long history and is an important part of Chinese traditional culture.In the multi-cultural global context,to translate and publicize texts on the unique Chinese painting art text will play an important role for excellent Chinese traditional culture to “go global”.This report is based on the C-E translation of Paintings through the Ages in Hunan Province ?:Comprehensive Volume.The third chapter of which,“Paintings on Xiaoxiang Areas by Famous Artists through all Ages” is selected for translation.To translate such an art text with strong cultural color,it is necessary to take into account not only the unique Chinese culture in the source text and the author's communicative intention on one hand,but also the two languages' differences in logicality and grammatical structure as well as readers' response for the translated text.Ecological translatology is applied to analyze the key points of source text from three aspects,namely linguistic,cultural and communicative levels.As the source text is of typical Chinese characteristics that are rich in run-on sentences while grammar and logicality are essential in English language,so in the linguistic level,division,order arrangement and combination are used to reorganize the logicality of run-on sentences.In the cultural level,to attain cultural exchange and communication,foreignizing translation and domestication are employed to translate the culture-loaded words,plus the proper translation strategies(such as transliteration and free translation),so as to adapt to the linguistic features of English.As the author's communicative intention mainly lies in appreciation of painting,repeated sentences are widely used in the source text to improve artistic affection.So in the communicative level,omission and adaptation are employed so that the complicated contents are simplified to adapt to the English environment and achieve the communicative goal.Based on the translation practice,this report analyzes in details the features of the art text and try to achieve better adaptation and selection from three dimensions,namely language,culture and communication in the process of translation,so as toprovide some experience for later translation of similar texts.
