Critical Metaphor Analysis Of Conceptual Metaphors In The State Of The Union Address Of Putin

The State of the Union Address has now become a powerful way for the President to play a leading role in the country,especially the development of modern media technology,which has transformed the State of the Union Address from an empty policy speech into a major lobbying propaganda.Putin's State of the Union Address published during his administration was rich in content,with vivid and flexible language expressions,including the clever use of conceptual metaphors.Not only does the conceptual metaphor in Putin's State of the Union address have a rhetorical effect,it is also the main channel for conveying political ideas and penetrating ideology.Therefore,studying the conceptual metaphor in Putin's State of the Union Address is one of the important ways to understand the deep meaning of Putin's State of the Union Address.British linguist Jonathan Chartres-Blake puts language,thinking and society into the research scope on the basis of comprehensive conceptual metaphor theory and critical discourse analysis theory,and proposes a critical metaphor analysis method.This method through the identification and explanation of conceptual metaphor,combined with the cognitive basis and specific context it generates,explains the historical and cultural and social reality implications behind metaphor,and provides a new method for conceptual metaphor research.This article takes Putin's State of the Union Address from 2013 to 2019 as the research object,and uses critical metaphor analysis as the framework to analyze the construction patterns,characteristics and functions of conceptual metaphors in Putin's State of the Union Address by identifying,explaining and explaining conceptual metaphors,and revealing different types of concepts The emotions and values contained in metaphors.Through the combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods,five main conceptual metaphors were identified,namely journey metaphor,war metaphor,architectural metaphor,drama metaphor,and anthropomorphic metaphor.Among them,the journey metaphor and architectural metaphor are mainly used to explain the problems existing in the domestic society in the fields of economy,people's livelihood,politics,etc.,and have a positive evaluation color.The war and drama metaphors are mostly used to express the problems of international relations and have a strong negative meaning.Studies have shown that the selection of conceptual metaphors in Putin's State of the Union Address is mainly influenced by factors such as ideology and social reality.Putin usesthe functions of conceptual metaphor,such as rhetoric,persuasion,empathy,to guide people's thinking path,triggering emotional resonance,so as to achieve the purpose of gathering social consensus.
