This thesis is a translation report on The Lion,published in 2016 by Penguin Random House,Canada's largest book publisher,and the author Saroo Blairley is an Indian-born Australian businessman.The novel tells the story of the author who was separated from his family at the age of 5,adopted by a white Australian couple and eventually returned home to meet his biological mother.The publication of The Lion has attracted wide international attention.The main line of the novel is people's quest for the root and the pursuit of love,which reminds the public of the concern for the lost children.This thesis chooses the first three chapters and the fifth chapter of the book as the translation original material,totaling16,000 words.As a realistic novel,The Lion involves a variety of cultural factors.The premise of understanding the cross-cultural factors is to consult a large number of parallel texts and watch relevant film and television works.This thesis is composed of five parts: Part One is a brief introduction to the translation project background,features and significance.Part Two is the translation process.Part Three is the introduction to Polysystem theory and the applications of this theory in the process of translation.Part Four is the analysis of translation cases,including complex word-combination,English rhetoric and culture knowledge.Guided by the Polysystem theory,many translation methods are used,such as annotation,conversion,repetition,explicitation and collocation.And the fifth part is the summary of translation.Marginal people are incompatible with mainstream culture,resulting in language changes and psychological problems.The novel describes the language learning and psychological problems of the author who was regarded as "the marginal man" of Australian culture.The linguistic phenomena and psychological knowledge are worthy of further study in the process of translation.
