The Research On The Movies Of Christian Mungiu

Cristian Mungiu has become one of the most iconic directors of Romanian New Wave after winning the palmed' or at the 60 th Cannes Film Festival for his film “4Months,3 Weekes and 2 Days”.Mungiu is not very productive,but being a journalist for years made his films not only excellent in the exploration and communication of realistic style,but also universal in the social,moral and ethical issues he discussed.In contrast to his previous dark comedy style,he has in recent feature films shown an increasing high level of control,restraint and power,like a sharp arrow to the point.However,the artistic characteristics of his films are often simply summarized as "Cristi Puiu's style" or "Romanian New Wave Style".In this paper,Christian mungiu's four feature films "Occident","4 Months,3 Weekes and 2 Days","beyond the hills" and "Baccalaureat" are taken as the main research objects.By text reading and case analysis,this paper will conduct a systematic and comprehensive study on mungiu's films regarding following three aspects:The first part sets in Romanian society and the era of the Romanian new wave movement,and deeply explores the crux hidden behind his works: social problems and the anxiety of the individual's fate.It points out that politics,anxiety,ethics,leaving and staying,choice and compromise are the motifs of his films.In the second part,through the analysis of the typical characters and the background characters in the films,the author explores the gender political and ethical relations shown and hidden behind the characters.It points out that the destruction of intimate relationship and the indifference among people constitute another layer of expression and writing of the theme of the films.The third part focuses on the director's perfect realistic style in sound and painting.Through the interpretation of the picture,it is concluded that the films are particularly good at using the fixed long lens of symmetrical composition to show the indoor repressed and closed space;the long motion shot with flat shoulder to externalize the inner emotions of the characters;the depth of field lens with precisescene scheduling to show the situation of the characters in a larger environment.The films are also good at using the complex and accurate real sound to expand the space beyond the picture,the smooth and accurate sound painting.The fourth part puts together the director's first black humor comedy and the latter three minimalistic realism dramas to comb and contrast the styles.We discuss the variations and consistency of the styles to point out the continuity and change in the theme,structure and audio-visual style.
