For the time being, the study of Children's Literature(CL)translation mainly deals with how to translate CL based on given translation theories. However, the factors involved in CL,and especially children themselves(ie.the consumer),should also be considered in order to realize the true value of CL through delivering a translation acceptable for children. This paper focuses on the translation strategies of adverbials in the first nine chapters of Queen Zixi of Ix by Layman Frank Baum,an American author specializing in children's fantasy. In this report, various translation strategies are employed to translate adverbials in the author's E-C translation task according to the cognitive features of children from Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development. In Piaget's opinion, children,in the preoperational stage, tend to be egocentric, visually orientated and have low durability. They are also likely to personate things.Their thinking is becoming reversible and abstract but is still based on concrete objects during the concrete operations stage.Over the final stage, children begin to get rid of objects and further develop in their abstract thinking. On the whole, children's cognitive features are related to unidirectional thinking, low durability, interest, direct thinking, and curiosity.Consequently, adverbial structures in the original should be rendered in flexible ways with the original content preserved, instead of being simply translated into their counterparts. There are then four strategies to translate adverbial structures applied in this translation task according to Piaget's theory.Firstly, verbalization is used to make the translation more vivid and interesting;secondly, repetition is meant to deliver a simple and specific translation which closes to the simplicity and repetition in children's language;thirdly, reorganization serves for making the translation clear and explicit for Chinese children's thinking;the last one is connection which is exerted by adverbial structures to arouse children's curiosity about participating in the plot. This translation practice, under the guidance of Piaget's theory, takes strategies to translate adverbials from the perspective of children's cognitive development. It also breaks the thinking set of combining CL with existing translation theories to translate it,attaching importance to the cognitive development of children.Consequently, the author believes that CL translation should correspond to the reading preferences of children and they can learn something valuable from the translation given that CL translation targets at children.
