With the rapid progress of multimedia technology,the expression of metaphorical meaning has become more multimodality.Using language symbols and non-verbal symbols together,such as pictures and sounds,is complementary and interlaced to highlight the transmission of meaning.In recent years,many scholars try to expand some features of verbal symbols into the multimodal discourse analysis by Lakoff & Johnson's metaphor theory.For instance,the Canadian scholar,Charles Forceville(2012),studies creativity in pictorial and multimodal advertising metaphors;Yu Yanming(2013)researches the multimodal metaphorical representation of news cartoons at home.However,most relevant researches are based on the cognitive linguistic theory,and only a few parts are under the Functional Grammar Theory.Besides,President Xi Jinping proposes the “Belt and Road” initiative to convey the core concepts of “consultation”,“contribution” and “benefits sharing”,and it opens up a brand-new road for the economic development of our country and the world.This paper will explore the multimodal representation of the theme of “Belt and Road” from the perspective of Functional Grammar.The purpose of this paper is to study how language and multimodal expression together manifest its core metaphorical meanings.This paper is based on Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar,Kress & Van Leeuwen's Visual Grammar and Zhang Delu's Intersemiotic Relationship Theory.Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar provides a framework for multimodal discourse analysis.The Visual Grammar proposed by Kress & Van Leeuwen(1996)is also based on Halliday's view of meta-functions.And relying on the Systemic Functional Grammar,Zhang Delu(2009)proposed an Intersemiotic Complementary Relationship framework,which can be used to analyze the relationship in different modes.What's more,this paper applies transitivity,voice and modality systems to analyze the metaphorical meaning presented in visual modes,and combining with Kress & Van Leeuwen's Visual Grammar Theory to analyze the metaphorical meaning presented in visual mode.It also borrows Zhang Delu's Intersemiotic Relationship Theory to investigate the influence of the complementary relationship in different modes on metaphorical meaning presented.This paper focuses on three questions:(1)how does the core metaphorical meanings of “consultation”,“contribution” and “benefits sharing” is manifested in the form of the multimodal symbols?(2)What characteristics are presented in the metaphorical meanings expression?(3)What kind of diplomatic concepts are conveyed in the expression of metaphorical meanings?There are some findings:(1)the core metaphorical meanings in verbal mode are mainly expressed by transitivity,voice and modality systems.(2)Visually,metaphorical meanings can be presented by narrative representation,and conceptual representation in the representational meaning,by contact,social distance and power relation in the interactive meaning,and by information value,salience and framing in the interactive meaning.(3)The complementary relationship in different modes also influences the expression of metaphorical meanings,and the auditory mode enhances the expression of meaning,and the non-reinforced complementary relationship between visual and verbal modes complements with each other in expressing metaphorical meaning.(4)China's diplomatic concepts of “openness”,“inclusiveness” and “win-win cooperation” can be also reflected in the “Belt and Road” publicity films.The significance of this paper are as follows: theoretically,this study is helpful to promote the interdisciplinary development between multimodal discourse research and other fields.It also broadens the field of dynamic discourse analysis and enriches the research dimension of multimodal metaphorical meaning.Practically,this paper uses a new perspective method to analyze the “Belt and Road” publicity films,and revealing its metaphorical meanings.It also provides some references for further studying this kind of discourse.
