Based on the concept of English curriculum standards,English courses at the stage of compulsory education should be oriented towards all students,focusing on the different characteristics and individual differences of language learners,and laying a good foundation for the development of students' comprehensive language application ability.The school the author works in is a junior high school located at the junction of urban and rural areas.Based on years of experience and observation about English teaching in junior middle school,the author finds that there is a large group of students whose English performance is very poor.They have great difficulties in English learning,so there is an urgent need to transform these English underachievers.While the appreciation education and the emotional education requirements of English curriculum standards for English learning supplement each other,so the author chooses the study of transformation of junior middle school English underachievers based on appreciation education as the topic.This research focuses on the changes of students' performance and five dimensions before and after the experiment.The five dimensions are: English learning interest and motivation,autonomy in English learning,learning confidence and habit,teacher-student relationship,learning attitude and method.The research methods of literature research,observation,interview,questionnaire are adopted to conduct the study which mainly discusses the following questions:(1)From the perspective of students' performance,are the teaching strategies based on appreciation education effective for transforming the junior middle school English underachievers?(2)From the perspective of five dimensions,are the teaching strategies based on appreciation education effective for transforming the junior middle school English underachievers?This study takes 152 students in two classes of Jiaxiang Xiang Cheng middle school as the research subjects(112 students are chosen from them as English underachievers according to their moral and intellectual performance).Questionnaires are conductedbefore and after the experiment and similarly,the pre-test and post-test of the experimental research are administered.In the process,100 copies of questionnaire are valid.The statistical software SPSS(17.0)is used to analyze the experimental data of questionnaire.The Excel Software is used to analyze students' performance.Through interview and the longitudinal and horizontal comparison of data,the study reveals the following findings:(1)From the perspective of students' performance,the teaching strategies based on appreciation education can help improve the performance of junior middle school English underachievers.(2)From the perspective of five dimensions,the teaching strategies based on appreciation education are effective to transform junior middle school English underachievers,especially conducive to improving students' performance,and they are effective in cultivating students' interest in learning English,enhancing motivation for learning English,improving students' learning attitude and methods and upgrading the relationship between teachers and students.
