As the study of the remains of ancient human activities, archaeology is an important part of historical science.Through the excavation of ancient sites and artifacts,we can explore the social, economic, cultural and living conditions at that time so as to make up for the lack of historical materials,in which archaeologists who uncover human history play an irreplaceable role.J.C.Catford's theory of translation shift details the types of translation shift at the micro level, advocating that in translation,if complete equivalence between the source text and the target text cannot be achieved, the translator should make appropriate translation shifts so that the target text can not only accurately convey the content and meaning of the source text, but also conform to the expression habit of the target language. This report selects Chapter 3 of Archaeologists in Print: Publishing for the People as its translation material.Under the guidance of J.C.Catford's theory of translation shift, the report mainly makes case analyses from level shift and category shift which subdivides into structure-shift,class-shift,unit-shift and intra-system-shift,aiming to summarize some strategies to deal with similar texts. It is expected that this report can promote the intellectual accessibility of archaeology and archaeologists to the Chinese public, and at the same time shed some light on the application of the theory of translation shift to informative texts.
