A Report On The Translation Of The Dream Life Of Sukhanov(Excerpts)

The new literary creation group of Russian writers who emigrated abroad around the demise of the Soviet Union has made literary circles of the world more diverse.The Russian-American writer Grushin is the epitome of it.As foreign language learners and translators,we are shouldering the important mission of spreading a more diverse and excellent culture from abroad.In view of this,the translator has chosen to translate Grushin's first novel The Dream Life of Sukhanov.It uses the eponymous protagonist's work and emotional experience as the clue,telling the story that Sukhanov,the editor-in-chief of a well-known art magazine,is unable to adapt to the changes brought about by the journalistic openness of late Soviet,and regains the beloved painting after unemployment and estrangement from his family.Up to now,there is no Chinese version available in China.Based on the functional equivalence translation theory,this translation report takes chapter 16 and chapter 17 of original novel as the research object,focusing on the different treatments of common words and culture-loaded words of puns,loanwords as well as surreal imagery words from lexical equivalence,and short sentences and long sentences from syntactic equivalence.On the lexical level,the translator applies the techniques like metaphrase,paraphrase,transliteration and conversion in translation;while on the syntactic level,the translator applies addition,blending,division,and reconstruction in translation.The difficulty in translation is the understanding of the original words and sentences,especially the parts of novel writing techniques and Russian culture.
