Sphinx Factor's Imbalance Of The Characters In Khaled Hosseini's Novels And Its Ethical Revelations

The best-selling Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini has been regarded as the spokesman of Afghanistan for his novels that clearly show ethical concern for the Afghan people.From the perspective of ethical literary criticism,the main characters in Hosseini's three novels,The Kite Runner(2003),A Thousand Splendid Suns(2007),and And the Mountains Echoed(2013),embody distinct characteristics of Sphinx factor's imbalance.What are the reasons of the imbalance? What are the ethical revelations to contemporary society? These two questions are worth studying.By using the qualitative research method of comprehensive comparative analysis and combining the writer,his works and social background,this thesis explores under the guidance of ethical literary criticism,the reasons of Sphinx factor's imbalance of the characters in Hosseini's novels as well as the ethical revelations.This thesis consists of seven chapters.The first chapter introduces the background of the research,research questions and its significance.Chapter Two presents a literature review about the research status quo of Hosseini's works.Chapter Three introduces the theory and key terms of ethical literary criticism and points out the research significance of Hosseini's works from the perspective of ethical literary criticism.Chapter Four presents Sphinx factor's imbalance of the characters in Hosseini's novels from four aspects: father,husband and wife,sibling,and friend.These characters are dominated by animal factor and lose their ethical consciousness,which leads to the improper ethical selection.Chapter Five analyzes the reasons of the imbalance from four aspects: war,religious extremism,ethnic discrimination and patriarchal society,and expounds that the deterioration of ethical environment leads to the imbalance.Chapter Six discusses the ethical revelations from the imbalance.The last chapter concludes the research findings,and the limitations of the study and suggestions for further study are stated.In today's world,peace and development remain the dominant theme of the times.It is of great significance to construct a harmonious society in contemporary world.Through the study of Sphinx factor's imbalance of the characters in Hosseini's novels,this thesis findsthat the ethical connotation of Hosseini's novels has the value of moral teaching for the construction of a harmonious society.It is hoped that people all around the world will enhance moral development,promote moral values,strengthen ethical order and jointly build a community with shared future for mankind.
