Vocabulary is the basic unit of language and is essental in language learning.As Schmitt & McCarthy(1997)pointed out,no matter how good a person's grammar is,how beautiful his pronunciation is,if there is not enough words to express his feelings or understand each other's views and ideas,he cannot communicate with others.Therefore,effective language communication cannot be achieved without vocabulary,nor can language learning exists without vocabulary.Through reviewing the literature,it has been found that vocabulary has always been a major “obstacle” for students to learn English.A lot of studies have shown that the reasonable and effective use of vocabulary learning strategies can make vocabulary learning more effective.For returnees from senior high school graduates,vocabulary learning is still of primary importance.Many scholars have carried out a lot of relevant research on vocabulary learning strategies of junior and senior high school students and college students,but there is little research on vocabulary learning strategies of returnees from senior high school graduates.Returnees from senior high school graduates are those who are going to participate in the next year's college entrance examination again after the completion of the college entrance examination.With the gradual implementation of the college entrance examination reform in recent years,it is reported that there are new signs of activity in the returnees from senior high school market.In view of this,this paper will take returnees from senior high school graduates as the research object.This paper selected 137 returnees from senior high school graduates in Yan'an Middle School in Yan'an as the research object to investigate.Through questionnaire surveys,interviews and other methods,the questionnaire on vocabulary learning strategy was compiled by Gu & Johnson as a tool to investigate the current English vocabulary learning strategies of returnees from senior high school graduates.Meanwhile,with the help of teacher and students,six students were interviewed.After summarizing and collating the collected data,this paper uses SPSS25.0 software to analyze the data.In order to explore the current situation of English vocabulary learning strategies used by returnees from senior high school graduates,at first,this study uses descriptive statistics to analyze the overall use of the four learning strategies,then uses independent sample t-test to compare the similarities and differences between male and female students and liberal arts and sciences students in the use of strategies,and finally analyzes the interview results and data.The results are as follows: 1)The overall frequency use of English vocabulary learning is “ sometimes used ”;2)the use of English vocabulary learning strategies is different between different genders and liberal arts and sciences students.Generally speaking,girls are better than boys;students who study liberal arts are better than sciences.Based on the results of the survey,this paper puts forward the following suggestions for the English vocabulary learning of the returnees from senior high school graduates: teaching students according to their differences in vocabulary learning strategies;guiding students to actively use vocabulary learning strategies according to the differences between boys and girls;teaching vocabulary according to the differences in liberal arts and sciences;teaching related vocabulary learning strategies and encouraging more communication between students and between students and teachers to improve students' ability of cooperative learning.
