Thomas Wolfe is an outstanding American novelist of 20th century,and a representative writer of the American South Renaissance.Of Time and the River is one of his autobiographic novels which was written in a certain background,and reflects many historical facts and social customs.As an American southerner,Thomas Wolfe's writing was influenced by many factors.At the same time,his writing also reflected many social phenomena and historical facts.This thesis analyzes both history writing and writing history of Of Time and the River for the first time.Chapter ? is the introduction part which introduces Thomas Wolfe and his Of Time and the River,and overseas and domestic research statues.It also introduces definition of history writing and writing history.Chapter ?,the history writing of Of Time and the River,is one of the body parts.This chapter is analyzed from three perspectives,politics,economy and culture.Political factors include the Civil War and World War ? and racial discrimination;Economic factors include the collapse of Southern production mode,deceitful prosperity and the Great Depression;Cultural factors include the American Southern Renaissance,the ancient Greek mythology and James Joyce's Ulysses.Chapter ?,the writing history of Of Time and the River,is the other body part of this thesis.This part explores what kind of history this novel writes from three levels,values and beliefs,material and economy,and the social structure.Values and beliefs covers the collapse of traditional family values,the collapse of beliefs,the pursuit for American dreams,and human alienation;Material and economy covers the influence of Industrial Revolution and inevitable capitalist crisis;Social structure covers the graceful upper class and the innocent lower class.Through the analysis of writing history and history writing of Of Time and the Rive,this thesis aims to enrich and improve the studies on Thomas Wolfe and his Of Time and the River,and also the studies on literature of American South.
