Chance,Soon and Silence, also called “the trilogy of runaway”,are three short stories written by Alice Munro, the first Canadian winner of Nobel Prize in Literature. They are included in Runaway. This 2004 collection captured the Gilles Prize the year it was published, and proceeded to take the third Man Book International Prize in 2009.Therefore,the fictions in Runaway are of great research value.Chance,Soon and Silence revolve around an ordinary woman,Juliet’s love, family ties, friendship, studies and career, telling a vivid story of the chances she encountered, the fleeting years she spent and the feeling and meditation of pain she steeped in.Most of the domestic studies on this trilogy are only occasionally involved in the discussion of the collection Runaway, and they are still confined to the perspective of women’s growth, narrative strategy, theme, etc. Thus from a new angle of schizoanalysis, this thesis attempts to study these three fictions not only as a whole but also independent of other stories in Runaway. This thesis consists of four parts. The first chapter introduces Alice Munro around her growing experience, main achievements and representative works, and sums up the research on her works by some scholars at home and abroad. The second chapter provides a brief overview of Gilles Deleuze’s life, his philosophical writings, and some theoretical key words of schizoanalysis. The third chapter is the core of this thesis that focuses on Juliet’s rhizomatic way of thinking and behaving, and with the help of the key words of schizophrenia, including “becoming”,“body without organs” and “deterritorialization”,it further explores the specific manifestations of Juliet’s schizophrenic personality. The Fourth Chapter summarizes the findings, conclusions and limitations of this thesis.Through the qualitative, descriptive and interpretive analysis of the source text, the present study finds that a series of deviant behaviors has deeply reflected Juliet’s schizophrenic personality.Although Juliet tries to achieve the spiritual flight by the process of becoming, the formation of body without organs and the movement of deterritorialization, her fate is still settled in endless silence.Juliet’s frustrated life is not only caused by her obsession with romance, loss of the insight into the nature of things and lack of spiritual belief, but also due to the problematic man in the patriarchal society, hence the trilogy of runaway also contains Munro’s infinite concern for women, the marginalized group. This thesis is a bold attempt to interpret Chance,Soon and Silence by means of schizoanalysis. It is earnestly hoped that the thesis will promote the further development of criticism of Munro’s works by Deleuzian philosophy, and bring some social enlightenment by the exploration of the connotation of the works.
