A Report On The Translation Of Educated,A Memoir(Excerpts)

This report focused on the summary of translation process of Educated,a Memoir(Excerpts).Educated,a Memoir had 363 pages.Due to its length was too long,the translator selected the first eight chapters of Part one to carry out translation and analysis.Educated,a Memoir was written by Tara Westover,Tara shared her own educated experience to show the importance of education.The selection described working experience in the junkyard,her parents’ opinions for education,the influence got from her brothers,the change of her opinion for the public school and so on.According to the title of Educated,a Memoir,the translator learned that the source text was a memoir.It had two major features: one was that the content recalled something that occurred in the past,and the other was that the behavior of the recall something occurred after a period of time.It usually consisted of four elements: title,beginning,body and conclusion.The translator illustrated the features of Educated,a Memoir by combining the compositions of memoir and Yan Fu’s translation standards: faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance in Chapter 2.In the case analysis,the translator gave a few examples of how to use proper translation skills to realize faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance.This report consisted of five parts.The first part introduced the translation task,including the background,the content of the book,and the reasons for choosing this material.The second part was a description of the features of the source text.The first was the features of the expressive text,and the second was the features of Educated,a Memoir.The third part was a description of the translation process,including three modules: preparations before translation,the process of translation and translation quality guarantee.The fourth part was the core part of this report.It illustrated how to use the translation skills to realize faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance.The faithfulness was realized by using the amplification,conversion and division;the expressiveness was realized by using the omission,amplification and division;the elegance was realized by using unpacking,conversion and division.Each skill was followed by two examples and the thinking process.This report could provide a reference for the later translation of memoir.The fifth part was a brief summary of this report,which pointed out the innovation and shortcomings of this report.
