Since the new century, with the rapid development of media technology and the changes of consumption ideology, images have shown strong momentum in all aspects of mass culture. The picture books of literary classics,as the products of the "era of picture-reading",have presented brand new and much richer image-text features and aesthetic features, bringing a new aesthetic experience for the mass readers. This thesis, based on the picture books of literary classics published in the last two decades of the new century, places the picture books in the context of consumer culture and visual culture and explores their features, aesthetic implications and aesthetic acceptance.Through the study of the hot phenomenon of picture books of literary classics, this thesis tries to explore current existence of literary classics and the status quo of the public's aesthetic acceptance. In addition to the introduction, the thesis is mainly divided into the following four parts:Part ?:Historical evolution and contemporary development of the picture books ofliterary classics. This paper defines the concept of picture books, examines the historical evolution of them and provides an overview of the development of the picture books of literary classics in the new century.Firstly, this paper points out that the images of contemporary picture books have been carefully designed in terms of form, content, visual aesthetic representation and consumption, embodying the visual priority characteristic of image domination.Picture books focus on image-text interaction in terms of content which makes the images and words perfectly supplement with each other. The integration of textual and graphic beauty provides readers with the visually aesthetic experience, which also makes picture books distinguish from traditional graphic books in the era of image consumption.Secondly, this thesis Clarifies the historical evolution of picture books.Picture books roughly go through three stages:the first stage is about the stage of ancient illustrated novels which are supplemented by pictures, the second stage is the developing stage of comic books in which pictures serve as the main content, the third stage is the flourishing period of cartoons and picture books in which pictures and words act in coordination with each other. Finally, the paper analyzes the reasons for the flourishing of picture books of literary classics in the new century from three aspects, namely, the visual culture, the technological support of image technology innovation, and the public respond for classics in the consumption environment.Besides, the thesis classifies their development status according to different themes.Part ?:A study of the relationship between the pictures and words in the picture books of classical literary. In this thesis, the author regards the picture books of literary classics as a kind of "vivid and graphic text" and puts them in the context of "image-text intertextuality”so as to explore the pattern of image-text intertextuality as well as the functional advantages of this pattern. This thesis holds that the relationship between image and text in history has gone through three periods, showing three forms, respectively,no separation between image and text, separation of image and text and integration of image and text.Generally speaking,image-text intertextuality refers to the dialectical relationship between image and text. They are closely related and they are the unity of opposites.Picture book is a kind of intertextual text in which the language and images are complementary with each other, coexist in the same textual space and jointly convey the meaning of the text.According to the pattern of image-text intertextuality, intertextuality of images and texts of picture books can be roughly divided into four categories,"images and texts are parallel and freely related","pictures are generated based on the text, acting as the supplement of text,"texts are added to the pictures to jointly participate in the narration","images and texts are perfectly integrated with each other to highlight the main idea".These four patterns of image-text intertextuality fully demonstrate the functional advantages of complementing, reinforcing and generating each other.Part ?:The study of the aesthetic implications and aesthetic reception of picture books of literary classics. From the perspective of aesthetics, this thesis focuses on three aspects, namely, aesthetic form, aesthetic spirit, and aesthetic inclination,to reflect the aesthetic form of the combination of the abstract and concrete, the aesthetic spirit of the infiltration of profound meaning and superficial meaning, and the aesthetic inclination of "being named"and "sensory pleasure".From the perspective of aesthetic acceptance, nowadays the receptive subject of the picture books of literary classics reflects the transformation from the elite to the public, and the reading experience is inclined to get both "pleasure of the eye"and "pleasure of the content".Therefore, aesthetic reception embodies the balance between the inheritance and consumption of the classics.Part ?:Reflecting on the popularity of picture books of literary classics and the Perspectives of picture books. This paper points out that picture books of literary classics,as the product of the graphic revolution, also have shown some limitations under the catalyst of image revelry and consumer consciousness, such as the silence of text meaning, the decline of aesthetic meaning, the convergence of mass readers' aesthetic taste, the scarcity of aesthetic spirit and so on.At the same time, the value of contemporary picture books of literary classics is reflected in the reintroduction of classics so that the meaning of literary classics can be reproduced in the context of mass culture. The integration of images and texts plays an important role in enhancing visual aesthetic literacy of the public, which provides a new development space for the acceptance and dissemination of classical literature.
