Writing instruction has always been an important part of senior high school English instruction.The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017)also sets higher standards for English writing ability of senior high school students.However,the current situation of senior high school English writing instruction is not optimistic.Thus,this study attempts to explore the difficulties and needs of teaching and learning in senior high school English writing instruction through conducting a needs analysis research aiming to provide a reference for the reform and development of senior high school English writing instruction.Based on the Needs Analysis Theory and Zone of Proximal Development Theory.This study will try to answer the following two research questions through reviewing literature relevant to the current situation of English writing learning and the current situation of English writing instruction:(1)What are the main difficulties for students and teachers in senior high school English writing instruction?(2)After the implementation of the new English curriculum standard what kind of new needs do students and teachers have in senior high school English writing instruction?The subject were 400 students and 120 teachers selected from five local senior high schools.Research instruments included questionnaires and interviews.The data were analyzed by SPSS23.0.The major findings of this research are as follows: At present,in senior high school English writing instruction,students mainly have difficulties in using words,sentences and grammatical knowledge,avoiding empty essay content,getting rid of Chinglish,and cultivating interest in learning English writing.Meanwhile teachers have difficulties in essay marking,correcting some mistakes in students' essay,leading the students to conduct adequate writing training,and increasing the teaching hour of English writing instruction.Based on the difficulties of students and teachers,the new needs of students and teachers in writing learning and teaching were discovered through conducting a Needs Analysis research.Students' needs include: teacher's instruction in the application of knowledge,teacher's improvement of feedback method,opportunities to communicate with teachers on writing learning issues,abundant reading materials and interesting writing courses.Teachers' needs include: opportunities to learn about new curriculum standard,tools to aid in essay marking,multimedia equipment that can be used to assist them in writing teaching,adding more English writing instruction content in textbooks,or textbooks that are used exclusively for English writing instruction.This study shows that there are still plenty of difficulties waiting to be solved and many unsatisfied needs in English learning and teaching.This study also proves that the application of Needs Analysis Theory in the studies of senior high school English writing instruction has important reference value and practical significance for the reform and development of senior high school English writing instruction.Based on the findings of this study,the researcher also put forward some suggestions for the reform of senior high school English writing instruction and brought some enlightenment to its development.
