The Literary Thought Of Wang Yinglin

Abstract/Summary:
Wang Yinglin,as one of the most well-known scholars in the closing period of Southern Song Dynasty,has made significant achievements in classics,historiography and philology,which made him one of the most valuable topics of history research to focus on.In recent years,more and more historians have begun to pay attention to his achievements in literature.Based on Wang Yinglin’s writings and former research,using actual major events in Wang Yinglin’s life as connections,this paper organizes Wang Yinglin’s ideas and perspectives on literature.This paper consists of three parts: introduction paragraph,body paragraph and conclusion.The introduction paragraph mainly demonstrates the research current states,the research significance as well as innovation points.The body paragraph is divided into three parts:The first part focuses on the years between Emperor Ningzong of Song’s Jiading Reign and the 4th year of Li Zong of Song’s Baoyou,during which time spent Wang Yinglin most of his time following his father to read and study.His ideas and perspectives on literature were impacted by the following three factors,which are family heritage,imperial examinations,and local points.Among these three factors,his family heritage,imperial examinations played more important role.The reason could be leading to his father(Wang Wei),who was the first generation in this family transferring from military field to scholars per imperial examinations.Hence this family did not possess a deep and enormous heritage to pass on from generation to generation,and therefore,the offspring paid more attention on imperial examinations.In addition,Wang Wei has a deep obsession with Boxuehongci,which also has a profound impact on Wang Yinglin’s studying.At that time,the Siming area was deeply influenced by Lu Xue and Lv Xue,under such circumstance,Wang Yinglin’s concept of literature was relatively conservative.The second part,combined with Wang Yinglin’s literary creation,further analyzes his concept of literature.This period mainly refers to the 5th year of Li Zong Baoyou to the end of the Southern Song Dynasty.At this time,Wang Yinglin worked as a government official.Most of his time was spent to write announcement for the national government.Due to his working content,he is very experienced in government writing.During this time,the regime of the Southern Song Dynasty was crumbed.Wang Yinglin tried to help maintain the central authorities with his best efforts,so the relationship between literature and Tao ism,for a while,also become his mainly focus.He believes that literature should be relatively independent,with its own developmental characteristics;the relationship between literature and Tao is complementary,and the function of literature does not It is only to express the "Tao";at the same time,the essay should contain the Tao,reflecting the role of teaching.During the wave of opposition to the lexical science,he summed up the methods and techniques of writing articles and wrote a book entitled Ci Xue Zhi Nan.In the third part,this paper discussed Wang Yinglin’s criticism and evaluation of literature.This period was from the end of the Southern Song Dynasty to the end of his life,based on his book Kun Xue Ji Wen.During this time,Wang Yinglin suffered from the demise of his country,and chose to quit working as an official to express his loyalty to the previous dynasty.He shared strongly connection with poets who had experienced losing and wars.As to his literature,previously he focused mainly on the relationship between literature and other theories,such as literature and Taoism,or literature and Buddhism.At this time he paid more attention to the character of the scholars.He admired Tao Yuanming and Du Fu,and criticized Wang Wei only because Wang Wei accepted a false position.This strong sense of morality became an important criterion for his evaluation of poetic texts.In addition,there were some comments from him on characters of Jiangxi poetic school,along with some recognition of the concept.In summary,Wang Yinglin’s evaluation of literature was relatively objective.He was different from pure Taoists and pure literary scholars,and would not be conclude absolute to one side,and against the other side.For controversial issues,he always used some historical facts implicitly to express his ideas,which is more or less related to the academic habits developed by his many sides.Due to limited academic expands,this part has not been thoroughly disscussed.However,Wang Yinglin’s relatively objective conception of literature can help us to perceive the current states of literature,and provide some reference to the value of its existence.
