Study On Chinese Versions Of The Remains Of The Day Based On Power Theories

The Remains of the Day is a masterpiece of the Japanese English writer Kazuo Ishiguro.It tells the story of a butler called Stevens who travelled by himself in a six-day trip.During the trip,he recollected his past thirty years' career of serving Lord Darlington.This thesis attempts to make a comparative study of the two Chinese translations of The Remains of the Day,and tries to find how they display power factors in terms of power space,Stevens' identity and the changing order of British empire based on Foucault's power theories.The thesis aims to answer the following questions:(1)What are the power-related factors in The Remains of the Day?(2)What are the differences between the two translations? And what do they suggest in the light of power theories?(3)How do these differences affect the delivering of the two translations? In which ways do the affections perform on the translations? With these questions in mind,the author made a comparative analysis between the two translations by Feng Tao and Mao Guoan.The result shows that both translations have displayed the power factors in The Remains of the Day to some extent,but Feng's translation delivers stronger effects than Mao's,which strengthens the idea of power in The Remains of the Day.Furthermore,the different effects of the two translations may be attributed to divergent translation strategies and practices.Hopefully,this study will help us approach translation differences from new aspects,and facilitate our understanding of The Remains of the Day while uncovering its broader cultural value.
