Study Of English Translation Of Report On The Work Of The Government(2015-2019)through The Lens Of Rhetorical Criticism

With the trend of globalization,our country's opening up is being expanded on all fronts,which attracts more and more attention from the world.Accordingly,more researches are conducted on China's international publicity translation.As the typical international publicity translation,the English version of Report on the Work of the Government plays a key role in enabling the outside to know more about China Therefore,it has been a heated research topic of irreplaceable significance,which is chosen as the subject of this study.The literature review of English translation of Report on the Work of the Government tells us that the perspectives and content are limited in the previous studies.Some studies are conducted from practical perspective while others are done from theoretical perspectives.To sum up,the theoretical perspectives mainly include Skopos theory,critical discourse analysis,power discourse theory,etc.Besides,a few studies are comparative studies with the State of the Union Address as the parallel texts.In terms of content,most are concerned with textual factors,such as lexical,syntactic,stylistic features,the existing translation problems,translation strategies and so on.Less attention was paid to the extratextual factors and there is a lack of descriptive studies compared with prescriptive studies.Hence,in this study,the English Translation will be explored from the new perspective of rhetorical criticism.Referring to the previous studies of rhetorical criticism,a paradigm reconstructed in this study is an integrated criticism model to analyze the translation texts.In this research,a qualitative method is adopted with case analysis.There are three steps in carrying out this criticism model,translation description,translation explanation and translation evaluation respectively.In the first step of translation description,the author applies pentadic analysis to analyze the five pentadic elements in this rhetorical discourse and then determine the dominant term "scene" with ratios.In translation explanation,rhetorical motive can be revealed with the analysis of rhetorical situation.For rhetorical situation,the exigence is demonstrated in the existing problems in current translation and an urgent need for effective international publicity and.English translation of Report on the Work of the Government is provided for western audience.Rhetorical constraints contain the requirements of English translation of Report on the Work of the Government and different rhetorical traditions between English and Chinese.Based on the analysis of rhetorical situation,the rhetorical motives can be revealed,mainly focusing on enhancing audience 's knowledge about China,achieving identification with audience and bringing more international exchanges.Last,in translation evaluation,combining specific cases,the author evaluates translators' ways of achieving identification with the audience by virtue of criticism criteria.Theoretically,rhetorical criticism provides us with a new perspective to analyze English Report on the Work of the Government,which can promote the growing studies on international publicity translation.Practically,for translators,the theory of rhetorical criticism can help them understand the rhetorical situation and rhetorical motives of the translation text.Further,it is helpful for them to put translation techniques into proper use in order to realize the ultimate goal of identification with the audience.Thus,it can provide guidance to the practice of international publicity translation.For translation critics,rhetorical criticism enables the critics to understand the translation text deeply.It is possible for them to carry out evaluations of the translators' techniques for identification,which can shed light on the translation criticism of international publicity translation.
