Musicality is a unique characteristic of Hong Ke’s novel writing. With the beautiful notes of the sound of nature, the sound of foreign lands and the sound of hometown,Hong Ke plays a beautiful music song.Hong Ke’s writing has a passionate, magnificent and melodious music sense which drives an undulating narrative melody, dances a beautiful “structure” dance, sings a song of life, equality and praise of human nature in the distant memory and composes the soul of the Central Plains Culture, whirling in the sky of the Chinese earth. This thesis analyzes the musicality of Hong Ke’s novels from four aspects: language, narrative, structure, theme and connotation. This thesis consists of introduction and four chapters. The first chapter expounds the musicality of language of Hong Ke’s novels. The musicality of language of Hong Ke’s novels is firstly reflected in the selection and use of words. No matter they are the reduplicated words with monosyllabic repetition,or the onomatopoeic words describing the sound of all natural things, they are like the notes of music in Hong Ke’s novels and compose a beautiful music.Secondly,it is reflected in the use of rhetoric devices.Parallelism keeps the sentences in alignment and the rhythm harmonious;reiteration forms a cyclic musical feeling;Thimble makes the language smooth and coherent;and synaesthesia breaks down the barrier of various senses, relating sound closely to various senses.Thirdly,it is reflected in the making and match of long and short sentences. When making sentences,Hong Ke is good at making long or short sentences in accordance with the narrative pace of the novel to form a freely flowing style of writing in novels. Finally,it is reflected in the musical atmosphere created by the insertion of a large number of poems and lyrics. The second chapter expounds the narrative rhythm of Hong Ke’s novels.Through the difference between story time and text time in the narration,Hong Ke shows the alternations of narrative rhythm in his novels, and makes a musical sense of ups and downs in the narration in the reversal of time with the flashbacks that make the narration clear and the flashforwards that are like musical overture. On the other hand,by the way of summary and omission, pause and scene,Hong Ke’s novels interweave fast and slow and make the sense of musical rhythm alternating fast and slow. Moreover,Hong Ke repeated the most importantimages to show the cyclic rhythm sense in his novels, which is in line with the narrative pace of his novels and his thoughts and feelings. The third chapter expounds the musicality of structure of Hong Ke’s novels. The musicality of the structure of the novel plays an important role in understanding the seemingly chaotic state of Hong Ke’s novels.By using the polyphonic structure and the multi-part chorus in his novels, the structure of Hong Ke’s novels have the characteristics of music.Meanwhile,Hong Ke is skilled in using the musicality of western folk songs to connect the plots and construct a long novel. The rhythm sense of structure of the novel is not only to adjust the pace of the text, but also to convey the writer’s emotions to the readers to achieve the spiritual connection between the readers and the writer. The fourth chapter expounds the theme and connotation of music in Hong Ke’s novels.Far from the noise of the modern civilization,Hong Ke plays a song of equality of all things with all the natural sounds he heard in the vast western regions as well as the vitality of nature to save the weak human life. Therefore,we can say that the sound of nature is the theme of Hong Ke’s whole life, and also the theme that almost all of his novels contain. The “Tianshan series” were written in shaanxi province which show a sound of foreign land and his call to the memory of the distant west region and his spiritual praise to the west region. The sound of hometown is also a theme rooted in his heart. The Silk Road revived his memory of the prosperous Chang’ an and the spirit of the central plains, which is a sound of music caused by the theme of his hometown to revive the spirit of the central plains. Most of the scholars in the academic circle agree that Hong Ke’s criticism of Shaanxi and praise of Xinjiang is actually the echo of the voice of his hometown in his heart. It is Hong ke’s luck to be born in Shaanxi where the spiritual civilization is rich and to travel far to Xinjiang to experience the life course of a foreign land different from the Han nationality. With the identity of two different cultures,he presents the readers with a common sound--the chorus of life, which is hidden in his heart and also the most easily ignored sound of modern civilization. Therefore, the musicality analysis of Hong Ke’s novels is not only an analysis of novel writing skills, but also a reveal of the rhythm of life hidden in his mind and the song of the central plains culture.
