In recent years,Sino-US trade war has intensified, which attracts the attention of news media from all over the world. And these media produce numerous related news reports. The seemingly objective and impartial news reports actually contain different ideologies, which often affect readers' opinions, ideas and judgments.Critical discourse analysis is quite helpful to reveal the ideology and power relations within discourses. So far, there have been few studies on critical discourse analysis of Sino-US trade war news reports according to the author's studies. Therefore, this research conducts the critical discourse analysis of Sino-US trade war news reports based on China Daily and The New York Times, which is of great theoretical and practical significance. With Fairclough's three-dimensional model as the theoretical framework and Halliday's systemic-functional grammar as the analytical mean, this study, based on 300 news reports about Sino-US trade war respectively extracted from China Daily and The New York Times and by building up two corpora, combining qualitative and quantitative research methods, aims to analyze the selected corpus with the help of AntConc 3.5.8(windows)2019 and tries to explore the following three research questions:(1)How do China Daily and The New York Times use keywords and concordance lines to describe Sino-US trade war?(2)What kinds of ideologies behind Sino-US trade war news reports from China Daily and The New York Times are revealed in terms of news source and reporting modes?(3)What factors exert influence on ideologies behind Sino-US trade war news reports from China Daily and The New York Times? The major findings are as follows:(1)The analysis of keywords and concordance lines indicates that China Daily and The New York Times use different discourses to describe Sino-US trade war.China Daily tends to use neutral words or positive words to describe China's attitude towards the trade war and effective measures taken in response to the trade war,and derogatory terms to accuse the United States of irresponsible trade practices. While The New York Times prefers to use commendatory words to defend the trade war launched by the United States, and negative words to express the dissatisfaction of the United States with China's measures to deal with the trade war.(2)From the perspective of news source, bothChina Daily and The New York Times prefer to use specific source to report news, but China Daily accounts for a relatively large proportion. In terms of reporting modes, both media tend to use indirect speech for news reporting to convey the ideologies hidden behind the news reports. The ideologies behind the news reports from China Daily can be summed up as follows: firstly,China opposes the trade war initiated by the United States, and the United States should be responsible for the trade war;secondly,China has the ability to deal with the trade war;thirdly, the trade war launched by the United States has damaged the interests of China, the United States and the world. The ideologies hidden behind the news reports from The New York Times can also be summarized into three aspects: firstly,China has violated world trade rules and engaged in unfair trade practices;secondly, the trade war launched by the United States is reasonable and legal;thirdly, the United States is not satisfied with the way China handles the trade war.(3)Political,economic and cultural context of China and the United States exert influence on ideologies behind Sino-US trade war news reports from China Daily and The New York Times. This thesis is helpful to enrich the researches of critical discourse analysis, especially news discourse analysis, clarify the essence of Sino-US trade war, analyze the current economic situation, and provide some implications for our economic development.
