A Report On E-C Translation Of Excerpts Of Chinese Lyricism,Shih Poetry From The Second To The Twelfth Century

This thesis is an English-Chinese translation practice report on Chinese classical poetry and its material is excerpted from Chinese Lyricism,Shih Poetry from the Second to the Twelfth Century(hereinafter referred to as Chinese Lyricism),written by the well-known American sinologist Burton Watson(1925-2017).There is no translation of the book before the translator carried out this practice.The book mainly introduces the important periods of the development of Chinese classical poetry in chronological order and explains representative poems of different dynasties.In the first chapter Burton introduces the book briefly.The second and third chapters mainly introduce and illustrate some poems in the Han dynasty(BC202-AD220).Based on the translation practice,this report is guided by the text analysis theory of Peter Newmark.According to the theory,the original text has literary and professional characteristics,and contains a large amount of knowledge and vocabulary of Chinese historical background and Chinese classical poetry.The text has both expressive and informative functions.In the process of translation,therefore,the reporter should be faithful to the original author and convey his ideas,meanwhile,take the reception and perception of the target readers into consideration.In respect of professional knowledge,especially the terms and knowledge related to Chinese classical poetry and Western poetry,the reporter refers to parallel texts,adopts translation skills such as addition,conversion and omission to ensure the accuracy and conciseness of translation.As for the linguistic difficulties,on the basis of communicative translation and semantic translation,the reporter adopts the translation techniques of division,combination and reorganization to give full play to the advantage of the target language and ensure that the sentences are smooth and in accordance with the habits of the target readers.
