Yecheng has a long history, and the history of this city can be traced back to the pre-Qin period.Cao Cao rebuilted Yecheng with the standard vertebra of the capital, which opened a short but glorious history of the city.Hou Zhao,Ran Wei,Qian Yan,East Wei,and North Qi regimes all established their capitals in Yecheng. In particular,East Wei and North Qi regimes created the South City on the basis of Cao Wei Yecheng. The Minister Gao Huan held Yuan Shanjian, the Xiaojing Emperor of the East Wei Dynasty,to move the capital to Yecheng to achieve the purpose of transferring the political center. They began to repair the North City and build the South City later, making the city bigger and more prosperous than the previous generation. The new Yecheng built during the East Wei and North Qi periods is similar in shape to Luoyang City in North Wei Dynasty, and has been further improved and innovated in many aspects. The topography of Yecheng is relatively flat and open, and the city layout is more symmetrical and neat.Nation-building system is a theory of capital construction in ancient China and Yecheng has a clear layout under the influence of this system.Imperial palaces are located in the center of the whole city. The main palaces, government offices, important gates and roads are all on the axis. The city is symmetrically arranged around the central axis. There were a large number of Lifangs in Yecheng, which were the basic management and organizational units at that time. And there are also many farmlands, royal gardens and tombs around Yecheng.Although the North Wei regime did not establish a capital in Ye,Yecheng was still an important military town at the time. The formation of Cao Wei Yecheng has affected the construction of Luoyang City in North Wei Dynasty. The East Wei and North Qi Dynasty also learned from the North Wei Luoyang City in urban construction. In the development history of ancient Chinese capitals,Yecheng was an important link that inherited from the past and followed the past, and had a profound impact on the construction of the future capitals. The social and cultural phenomenon of the Northern Dynasties also had an important impact on the construction and development of Yecheng. One is Kanyu Thought of ancient China.During the Wei Jin Dynasties, people had a more systematic and profound understanding of Kanyu Fengshui, and many famous classic theories ofKanyu emerged. These theories are reflected in the construction of Yecheng. For example, the unique tortoise design, and names of city gates representing Yinyang ang Five Elements.Compared with the ancient capitals of Changan and luoyang,Yecheng does have some defects like lacking of barriers, threating of the river from the perspective of kanyu. The builders improved the Fengshui conditions of Yecheng by constructing a moat and faimland water conservancy facilities. They make full use of kanyu theory to guide the construction of Yecheng.Yecheng in Northern Dynasties also had influences from Buddhish factors. With the shift of East Wei and North Qi political centers,Yecheng accepted a large number of Buddhist resources suich as Buddhist temples, monks, and ancient books in Luoyang.Yecheng became a Buddhist center of northern China at that time. There are many Buddhist temples in Yecheng, and the number of believers is very large, from the support and admiration of the rulers and nobles,to the daily worship of ordinary people. The large number of Buddhist buildings is an important part of urban planning in Yecheng. The ruins of Yecheng Buddhinst architecture can reflect the fusion of foreign Buddhist architectural styles and traditional Chinese palace buildings at that time.In addition, the exquisite cultural relics unearthed from the Buddhist site in Yecheng show the prosperity of Yecheng Buddhism in Northern Dynasties.
