Nowadays,spoken English plays an important role in international economic exchanges and cooperation,after graduation,students in vocational schools may have the chances to communicate with foreigners.Excellent spoken English is essential to successful employment.In March 2020,the Ministry of Education promulgated the vocational education English curriculum standards,which set requirements for students to use language knowledge and skills to communicate in the workplace.However,students in vocational schools have low interest in English learning.The methods of Spoken English teaching show little attention to the characteristics of students in vocational schools.Therefore,an effective spoken English teaching method is needed urgently.In recent years,experiential learning has been widely used in various fields at home and abroad,which focuses on integrating personal experience into class and actively guides students to participate in interactive activities.It is more suitable for students in vocational schools,who value their sensual experience.This thesis aims to apply experiential learning to spoken English teaching and verify whether it is helpful to improve the spoken language of students from vocational schools and to explore a method of spoken English teaching in vocational schools based on experiential learning.This research uses qualitative and quantitative research methods,such as experimental methods,questionnaire methods and interview methods.Two animation classes at Huaxia Vocational School in Qingdao City of Shandong Province were selected as the control class and the experimental class.Spoken test was conducted at the beginning of the experiment and scores were used to assess spoken English level.Students in control class used the traditional learning methods while students in experimental class used experiential learning method for spoken English teaching.After the three-month experiment,students' spoken English levels were tested,data was collected through questionnaires and interviews.SPSS 22.0 is used to analyze quantitative data and this study tries to solve the following three questions:1.What is the current spoken English level of students in vocational schools?2.Can the spoken English teaching based on experiential learning effectively improve the spoken English level of students in vocational schools?3.Can the spoken English teaching based on experiential learning enhance the students' interest of learning English in vocational schools? Has it strengthened the self-confidence of students in English learning?The research results show that(1)there is still much room for making progress on the spoken English level of students in vocational schools.The English knowledge of pronunciation,grammar and vocabulary is not solid enough.The daily communicative language is insufficient,and the communicative ability is not strong.(2)After experiment,the spoken English teaching based on experiential learning has increased participation of students in class activities,the scores of posttest and the results from questionnaires show that students' vocabulary is enlarged,their daily communicative expressions are used properly,their communicative competence in spoken English is improved,As a result,spoken English level has improved.(3)The interviews results show that students believe that experimental learning has enormously aroused their interests and effectively fostered self-confidence in English learning.In summary,the spoken English teaching method based on experiential learning can improve the spoken English level of students in vocational schools,enhance their interest and confidence in spoken English learning.It is an effective spoken English teaching method that is suitable for students in vocational schools.However,it also has some practical problems that cannot be ignored.Teaching materials based on experiential learning are not abundant.Teachers need to collect and integrate a large amount of English materials in preparation.It requires high class management ability in implementing experiential learning in teaching,which consumes teachers too much time and energy.It is necessary to develop an easy-to-use method and to guide English teaching practice in the future.
