A Study Of Xuande’s Short Story "Grass Turtle"

Xuan De was one of the Korean modern writers to engage in literary creation between novels and fairy tales at the end of the 1930s.Differing from the mainstream children’s literature that placed the center of novels on children’s growth and emotional development at that time,Xuan De got rid of the mainstream literature framework and created the own unique literary writing mode and ways of writing in the field of realistic literature.His creative emphasis was focused on children’s mentality and action,instead of didacticism of children’s novels.Also,he described the realistic viewpoints in works from the children’s perspective with childishness.From the perspective of "subaltern study’",the author in this thesis deeply analyzed the "grass tortoise" of Xuan De,reanalyzed the reality of the young protagonist in Xuan De’s works and reshaped the realistic scene.Based on it,the author used "social historic criticism" to analyze literary significance.With the theme of Xuan De’s personal experience,the author used works to vividly reveal the down-and-out reality and life of grassroots at that time.Since creation,Xuan De was always concerned by the literary circles.Moreover,he was always the popular research object of contemporary researchers.However,due to special identity,the comments on the author and works might be simplex.To deeply know about the "grass tortoise" of Xuan De,the author divided this thesis into two chapters for analysis.In chapter two,the author briefly analyzed the novel from the following aspects,including the author’s career,character appearance in works,and character relation.In chapter three,the author analyzed the overall structure and real world in the young protagonist from the perspective of "subaltern study".This thesis was focused on the social status revealed by the author from the unsophisticated childish world of the young protagonist.Xuan De’s works focused on the innocent children’s world and practical problems.In the works,children had to sacrifice themselves for poor finance in most situations.It is lucky that the young protagonist never lost his innocence for social cruelty.Nowadays,we are used to observing the adults’ cruel society from the adult perspective,so we are hard to get new viewpoints of contemporaneity.Therefore,to analyze society from the children’s perspective is a new round social analysis from different perspectives.It is also the significance of this thesis.
