A Study Of Appraisal Meaning And Construction In Xi Jinping's Discourse And Its Translation

The Appraisal Theory is evolved from Systemic Functional Linguistics and is discourse resources of interpersonal meaning and further refinement of its interpersonal function.The appraisal meaning includes the discourse resources,the manner of discourse,and the degree of discourse participation that involved in the appraisal dialogic activities.And the construction of appraisal meaning is concerned with many factors involved in the appraisal process.Therefore,in the process of translation,how to successfully translate the appraisal meaning of Xi Jinping's discourse in the original text and how to construct the appraisal meaning is a problem worthy of attention.At present,this aspect of the research is relatively weak,which needs further research.As a typical representative of political discourse,Xi Jinping's speech contains abundant appraisal resources,which can reflect Xi Jinping's position and views on specific events,and demonstrates the image of China.Based on the appraisal theory,this paper mainly employs the quantitative combined with qualitative method to analyze the appraisal resources in Xi Jinping's speech and to conduct a comparison and exploration on the construction of the appraisal meaning in the original text and the target text.This paper initially interprets the criterion of recognition of appraisal meaning from the attributive and linguistic characteristics,and expounds its function in Xi's speech.And then the paper synthesizes the specific distribution of appraisal resources in Xi's speech from three aspects of appraisal theory:attitude,engagement and graduation.This paper probes the mechanism of appraisal meaning construction in the translation and discusses the relative factors involved in the negotiating and constructing of appraisal meaning and elucidates how the translator as a mediator and participant successfully conveys and adjust the speaker's intention and interpersonal communicative effect.It turns out that the attitude meaning is more frequent than engagement and graduation meaning and there exists difference in the translation of these meanings.And the construction of the three system of appraisal meaning should concern with the inter-subjectivity of all participant involved in the dialogic activities and production of the appraisal meaning,and contexts which are cultural background and value system the participants shared and some certain environment of language usage.The importance should also be attached to the accessibility and validity of the engagement and the reading position of the target readership.The translation is equivalent to the expression of appraisal meaning to the great extent.However,sometimes the translator adjusts its appraisal meaning,such as the amplification and reduction of the appraisal meaning in the target text,the weakening of the evaluative effect and so on.Translator adopts the syntactic conversion,contextual adjustment and pragmatic equivalence strategies to achieve the functional equivalence between the target text and the original text.Therefore,the construction of the appraisal meaning can be used as one of the criterion of translation criticism,which will be conductive to the development of translation theory and the guidance to the translation practice in political discourses.
