Abstract/Summary:
Based on the understanding of literature itself and the practice of literary writing,Italian writer Umberto Eco(1932-2016)has formed his own unique understanding of how literary tradition affects writers’ creation. In the post-modern cultural context,Eco consciously put into practice his imitation and understanding of the literary creation techniques, forms, images and even aesthetic pursuits of Manzoni,Thomas Mann,Borges and other writers in his influential novel The Name of the Rose.It is worth noting that many western literary critics have talked about the "influence" of literary tradition on writers’ literary creation, and have also touched on the related"imitation" issue. While talking about the "influence" he received in his writing process,Eco not only responded to the previous discussion on "influence" in the history of literary criticism, but also started a dialogue with Harold Bloom,a representative of his contemporary "Yale School",expressing his own views and understanding around the issues of "anxiety of influence" and "misreading”.Briefly speaking,Eco’s concept of "influence" involves many issues such as the relationship between literary tradition and personal creation, the mentality and ability of future generations to face the forerunners, the creative strategies adopted by writers, and the academic debates with "Yale School".As the most important literary creation of Eco,The Name of the Rose shows the "influence" relationship between writers from content to form, from specific images to the pursuit of aesthetic style. In view of this, taking The Name of the Rose as an example, and through exploring Eco’s conscious discussion of "influence",it is possible to have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the creation process of this literary text The Name of the Rose,Eco’s unique understanding of the "influence" of literary tradition on writers, and even Eco’s viewpoints on the meaning and value of "literature".This thesis is divided into six parts. The introduction briefly introduces Eco’s academic research and literary creation based on his life, focusing on how Eco gradually formed his own research features and writing style in the traditional western culture and academic resources. At the same time,it discusses the research content, main ideas and research value of this paper on the basis of summarizing the overall status quo of Eco’s domestic and foreign research reviews. In the first chapter, particularizing the formation process of Eco’s concept of "influence",sketching the historical context of literary "influence",emphatically discussing the "anxiety of influence" theory which closely related to Eco’s concept of "influence",and analyzing the main connotation of Eco’s concept of "influence",comparing the differences between Eco and other critics’ issues in the synchronic and diachronic view.Chapter two, taking The Name of the Rose as an example, exploring the text and combining with Eco’s own discussion on the influence on the creation process of this novel, analyzing the influence relationship between Manzoni’s I Promessi Sposi,Thomas Mann’s Der zaberberg,Doktor Faustus and The Name of the Rose from the aspects of content and form.Chapter three,by exploring Joyce and Borges’ writing and Eco’s learning and imitation of the two authors, analyzing the meaning of specific images and the formation of aesthetic style in The Name of the Rose.Chapter four, comparing the similarities and differences between Eco’s concept of "influence" and other literary critics, especially Bloom’s "anxiety of influence",exploring Eco’s contribution to the concept of "influence" and relevant academic issues,at the same time, taking The Name of the Rose as the starting point to explore Eco’s understanding of literature and writer’s responsibilities. The conclusion, combining with the background of the times to analyze Eco’s cognition in tradition and explore the value of literature in contemporary era.Generally speaking, there were two aspects in the value of Eco’s intentionally imitation on the literary tradition in his creative practice The Name of the Rose.On the one hand,it promoted Eco’s consciousness of recognizing the literary tradition and thus formed his concept of "influence" as an angle of understanding his literary thoughts. On the other hand, this literary writing practice was not only a dimension of inheriting the tradition, but also reflecting his understanding of literature and the writing itself, then providing more possibilities for the value of literature.
