Conceptual metaphor is an important means to recognize human's cognitive pattern.Due to the abstract nature, emotions are expressed to a great extent through language and the use of conceptual metaphors occupies a high proportion in emotion language. Therefore, the research of these emotion metaphors is of great significance. Moreover, the linguistic and cultural diversity in the word determines that the contrastive analysis cannot be excluded from the study of emotion metaphors, which can contribute to a more comprehensive interpretation. At present, there are quite a lot of comparative studies of emotion metaphors between English and Chinese, but when it comes to the comparison of Spanish and Chinese, there are quite rare. This paper first sorts out the development of conceptual metaphor theory and the current research status at home and abroad, then clarifies the connotation, working mechanism and classification criteria of conceptual metaphors, and makes a detailed definition of sadness conceptual metaphor. On this basis,in chapter 3 and 4,through text and corpora analyses,a certain number of sadness metaphors in modern Spanish and Chinese are collected and are classified according to their source domain. Thus,we can compare the cognitive patterns of sadness in these two long-distance languages and clarify their commonness and individuality.Through the comparative analysis, this paper further confirms the existence of cognitive universality and cultural differences in emotion metaphors.Although Spanish and Chinese have similarities in the source domain related to embodied experience and human's daily life, there are also different cultural models for emotions that arise from unique pattern of metaphorical thinking. The differences of these metaphors are caused by the cultural contexts of language users. The word is abundant in distinct cultures and their unique personalities in diet, literature and social production have created colorful emotion metaphors.
