Recently, scholars have reinterpreted the concept of emotion, and found that culture might influence emotion recognition and emotion expression.Based on this understanding of emotion, this paper decides to explore the characteristics of emotion expression in second language and native language of second language learners from different cultural backgrounds. And this is an exploratory research for further discovery.Based on picture books as experimental material, some Korean,Arabic and English speakers are invited to take part in this storytelling activity. Those advanced Chinese learners' stories are recorded, and their recordings are compared with the stories of Chinese native speakers. To find the relationship between the cultural backgrounds and emotion expression, emotion words and the characteristics of pitch are observed. And this paper finds four points:(1)Chinese students use more written emotional words than international students.(2)The pitch of Chinese and Korean students to express the words about happiness is higher than the average pitch of the sentences,Chinese and Korean students are close in the range of change, but English and Arabic students' Chinese expression does not show such characteristics.(3)English native speakers have a wide range of pitch in both their native language and Chinese expressions. The average pitch range of Arabic native speakers is behind to that of English native speakers, while that of Chinese and Korean students is relatively narrow.(4)When native speakers of English and Chinese express sentences containing emotion words in their mother tongue, their intonation characteristics conform to the characteristics of emotion expression. However, when foreign students say these sentences with emotion words in Chinese, their expression does not conform to the feature of emotion expression. Finally, some teaching suggestions about emotion expressions in Chinese and pronunciation are put forward.
