Study On Marginal Man From The Perspective Of PDA

Since the 20 th century,globalization has become increasingly prominent,accompanying with the intense job competition,widespread population mobility,and uncertainties in variously frequent risks,which have inevitably affected people's mental and physical state.The affection may come from the impact of the rapid changes in the external environment on the accumulation of knowledge in people's inner world.Under this strong impact,a type of transformational personality has been reasonably and significantly generated: marginal man.The sense of alienation brought by the marginal man is not only their own resistance to the collective masses,but also the exclusion from the outside ambient.They are often treated as heterogeneous by the most universal-values group,being neglected,marginalized and even bullied.Previous studies on marginal man were mostly interpreted from the perspective of sociology and psychology.Few scholars have studied the emotional appeal and potential attitude contained in marginal man.What's more,many commentators have evaluated marginal man with the distorted stereotypes like being inferior,suffering,tragic,weak,ignorant,and lonely.This kind of negative judgment will be bound to cause negative social impact,which is not conducive to the development of social modernization.With the help of linguistic knowledge,this thesis will make an in-depth understanding of marginal man: we manage to build a good atmosphere and seek bright development in marginal man's world through positive discourse analysis.The film Mary and Max is taken as the corpus object.With Martin's Appraisal Theory,the qualitative analysis method is used to expound how the three subsystems in the attitude system express emotions and convey the positive meaning.Through the discourse analysis of the two protagonists,Mary and Max,this thesis examines the survival dilemma of marginal man and analyses the tolerant and positive understanding of human nature expressed by marginal man behind their seemingly pessimistic language.The research results show that in the overall language resources,the amount of positive attitude potentials is more than the amount of negative attitude potentials;with the continuous sublimation of the friendship between the two marginal protagonists,the attitude resources of the two protagonists have also been changed and the language resources tend to be more and more positive.This reflects the process of marginal man thinking about life,seeking truth,living their own destiny bravely and accepting imperfections.This thesis demonstrates the vitality of discourse analysis in the field of social concerns by analyzing marginal man's discourse,and develops different perspectives for sociological research.The results of this analysis can provide reference ideas for future marginal man's research,and help domestic researchers to strengthen their concern and correct their insight into marginal man in order to build a more harmonious society.
