Mind map is put forward by Tony Buzan,a famous British scholar in 1960 s.The symbol of the introduction to world is the publication of Use Your Head.Mind map is a visual graphic tool;it can reflect the divergent thinking of human brain.As Tony Buzan said,by using mind map,you can easily improve your memory and creativity.As a visual learning method and divergent thinking tool,mind map is widely used in teaching all over the world.Therefore,this study is combined mind map with English teaching to explore the practical effect on junior school English reading teaching.Based on the analysis of the literature,this paper introduces the research background of mind map and the research status at home and abroad.The theoretical basis of mind map are discussed in detail.According to different types of reading articles,the author gives examples of different mind maps,and they are represented in the form of diagrams and narratives.Through the combination of mind map and English reading teachng,this study attempts to explore whether mind map can effectively help students improve their English reading performance and cognitive reading strategies.The author aims to answer the following two questions:1.Can the application of mind map in English reading teaching improve students' reading performance in junior school?2.What's the effect of mind map on junior school students' cognitive reading strategies by using it in English reading teaching?The experiment lasted 4 months,which was from September 2018 to January 2019.The subjects were 67 students from Class 107 and Class 108 of Haituo Junior School.At the very beginning of the experiment,the test data showed that the number of students and the English level were roughly equal in two classes.In the process of implementation,the teacher used mind map to teach reading in the experimental class,while the control class still adopts the traditional teaching methods.The purpose is to test the actual effect of mind map in English reading teaching.At the end of the experiment,after the test,the data were collected andanalyzed.Through collecting and analyzing the results of English reading test,it is found that the results of the experimental class are better than those of the control class.Therefore,mind map can really help middle school students improve their reading performance.Through the analysis of questionnaire data,it can be concluded that compared with the pre-test stage,students' application of cognitive reading strategies has improved significantly.So mind map really works in English reading teaching.In order to give full play to mind map,teachers should check and update their teaching methods,combine mind map with English teaching and improve their teaching efficiency and students' learning efficiency.
