David Herbert Lawrence,a famous English writer and poet,is best known for his works Sons and Lovers,The Rainbow,Women in Love,Lady Chatterley’s Lover and New Poems.Since their publication, these works have become very popular, and successively have been translated into Chinese by some Chinese scholars and poets. In recent years, quite a few scholar and literary critics abroad have begun their studies on the philosophical ideas and psychoanalysis in his works, but few of their research finding have been translated into Chinese. It should be stressed that very few great writers have written works on psychoanalysis, while Lawrence’s Psychoanalysis and the Unconscious(1921)and Fantasia of the Unconscious(1922)reveal his deep reflections on human psychology, which is echoed in The Art of the Self in D.H.Lawrence by Marguerite Beede Howe. The Art of the Self in D.H.Lawrence is very difficult due to its rich psychological and literary implications, and it examines thoroughly the ideas of personality and the self in Lawrence’s different novels, which register the significant shifts in different periods in terms of his concept of the self.It is clear that the study of the psychology of the self presented in Lawrence’s novels in different periods has great significance. However,it is a pity that such books of literary criticism as The Art of the Self in D.H.Lawrence have no Chinese version up to now. Thus, under the guidance of my supervisor,I have translated a part of The Art of the Self in D.H.Lawrence and expect that this translation project and research will help more Chinese scholars and literary critics understand and show concern over such works of literary criticism and provide valuable reference for those scholars who are interested in the literary criticism of D.H.LawrenceThe translation report consists of four parts: Part one is the description of the translation task including the background of Marguerite Beede Howe and The Art of the Self in D.H.Lawrence,and significance of the theme and style of the ST.Part two presents some preparations done before the translation task, the translation strategies and techniques adopted during the translation process.Part three is the major part of this translation report, which mainly discusses the difficult words and complex sentences during the translation process and analyzes them indetail with some specific examples under the guidance of strategies of foreignization and domestication. The last part gives a summary of the whole report,in which some translation experience and limitations are given. |
