Phonics is known as’ learning to read’ in the United States,serves the ultimate independent reading and writing.By learning the corresponding rules of phonics of letters or combinations of letters,students can develop the ability of spelling-out and word-spelling.Through a questionnaire survey of part of primary school English teachers in Kunming,the research found that most primary school English teachers know phonics and are interested in it.Eighty percent of them think that phonics is better to use.Through the questionnaire survey of primary school students,most of them felt that the study of phonetic were boring.And they are more interested in phonics.At present,researches on phonics mainly focus on the combination of vocabulary and phonetic teaching.It is found that phonics is helpful to improve students’ vocabulary and cultivate their phonetic awareness,while research on phonics based on picture book is few.Therefore,this paper conducts an practical study on whether phonics-based picture book can effectively improve students’ spelling and spelling-out ability and thus improve their reading ability,and investigates students’ interest in learning English after learning phonics.In this experiment,86 students in grade 5 of the Fourth Primary School in Gaoxin zone in Kunming were selected as experimental subjects,with one class as the control class and one as the experimental class.Before the experiment,the research conducted a questionnaire survey and a test on the students’ interest in English learning,spelling and reading ability,so as to understand their interest in English learning and their spelling and reading ability.During the experiment,the research combined Songbirds Phonetics and the section of ‘Let’s spell’of pep textbook with phonics teaching.In the research,phonics was taught in a class every two weeks.After 16-week long phonics teaching,the research made the post-test and the post questionnaire survey to students about their interests and spelling and reading ability.The author used SPSS(19.0)to analyze the data.The results showed that: 1.Phonics teaching can improve students’ interest in English learning;2.Phonics teaching can improve students’ spelling and spelling-out ability;3.The effectiveness of phonics on students’ reading ability is not significant.But phonics can improve students’ interests on reading.
