This paper takes Raymond Carver’s short stories as the research object, trying to explore their narrative characteristics. The introduction mainly introduces Carver’s life and creation, research status at home and abroad, and narrative style. The main body of the thesis is divided into three chapters: Chapter 1 starts with the narrative structure of Carver’s novels, demonstrates the arbitrary and open characteristics of his narrative structure by the simple beginning of the sketch, the dilution of the plot and the ending of the open novel;Chapter 2 discusses Carver’s unique narrative time from the three dimensions of time sequence, time interval and frequency. It points out that Carver interlaces time in well-ordered sequence, forms changeable rhythm with relaxed time interval, and highlights the focus of the story by repeating narrative with high frequency.Chapter three explores the unique charm of Carver’s novels from the narrative perspective. It is believed that Carver skillfully uses camera perspective to present dramatic visual experience to readers, uses limited third-person perspective to let readers experience the joys, sorrows and sorrows of characters, and uses common first-person perspective to narrate to close the distance between readers and characters. However, the limitations of the first-person lead to unreliable narration and thus different texts emerge.Charm.The concluding part summarizes the contents of the three chapters in order to make readers understand the narrative characteristics of Carver’s short stories systematically.
