Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of Patriotism Representation In "Wolf Warriors ?"

As a modern art visual and auditory form,film has been deeply into all aspects of human life and becomes an indispensable part in human's daily life.With the deepening development of film discourse research,film discourse have been discovered and studied in various fields.Patriotism is the eternal themes of Chinese nation.Studies of film discourse on patriotism theme are beneficial to enrich and expand research range in film discourse,and it is of great significance to carry forward and foster national spirits and social values.As a semantic unit,discourse can be expressed not only by language,but also by other language symbols,which has promoted the establishment of multimodal discourse analysis.MDA inherits and develops Halliday's theory in Systemic Functional Linguistics and social semiotics.After continuous innovation and exploration,Kress and Van Leeuwen(2006)put forward a systematic and complete visual and aural grammar system.MDA has provided vigor and vitality to film discourse.Since numerous researchers have been working on foreign language teaching,commercial advertisement,film posters etc.As one of important methods of discourse research,MDA has been greatly developed in recent years.However,most studies have failed to focus on film discourse in patriotic theme.Based on Kress and van Leenwen's visual and aural grammar theories,this thesis aims to conduct MDA on the movie Wolf Warriors ?.Adopting qualitative and quantitative approaches,some representative modes featured with patriotic spirit,such as image,language,music and sound will be analyzed in detail.Furthermore,with the help of software Nvivo11 and Adobe Audition CS5.5,some visual and auditory modes are analyzed with integration,which can deeply dig out the potential patriotic connotations in the movie.The result shows that visual and aural grammar theories provide strong applicability to visual and auditory modes analysis.There are some research findings as follows.Firstly,from the perspective of visual mode,representational meaning is of great significance to show and promote the development of movie plot;interactive meaning can show more social relations between modes in the movie;compositional meaning plays an important role in the representation of the structure and layout of the film discourse.Secondly,as for auditory mode,human voice,music and sound effects in the movie together constitute a dynamic pattern.The variation of pitch and sound change can well reflect modes relationship in film discourse.Thirdly,in film discourse,interaction and complement of visual and auditory modes make patriotic theme reach recurrence perfectly.In conclusion,this research will be beneficial to expand and enrich the content of MDA,and also provides a new perspective for the researchers who are interested in film discourse analysis and patriotism research,which is of great practical significance.
