This paper takes 43 "bamboo" theme paintings as research objects.The discourse features of the combination of images and words belong to the topic of "multimodality",which concerned by many subjects.Ancient paintings and poems also contain rich historical and cultural connotations.The paper recognizes metaphor is not only a rhetorical device but also a cognitive process and thinking method of human beings.Based on Forceville's multimodal metaphor theory,the paper studies43 "bamboo" theme paintings were drawn by 33 painters who were famous for their bamboo paintings from the Tang dynasty to the Qing dynasty.The paper finds out the characteristics of multimodal metaphor and its cognitive motivation.Firstly,the paper classifies the "bamboo" theme paintings according to the painting content of image modes in the paintings.This classification based on the mountains,rivers,flowers,and birds.Characters classified on the basis of the theme of ancient Chinese paintings.With bamboo as the main image content,other things in the paintings were subdivided.It is divided into five categories: bamboo and flowers and birds,bamboo and stone,bamboo and landscape houses,black bamboo,bamboo and scholars or ladies.On the basis of classification,some image modal appearing many times.It combined with typical cases to analyze their metaphorical connotations.Secondly,based on Forceville's multimodal metaphor theory,construct a multimodal metaphor integration model.The paper analyzes the implications of multimodal metaphors generated by the interaction of images and text modes,i.e.paintings and poems,in 43 paintings.Two typical cases were selected,namely: Zheng Xie's "Black Bamboo",Xie Shichen's "Poetic Atmosphere Reigns over a Bamboo Forest at Duling".To interpret the dynamic integration process of their multimodal metaphors in detail,so as to obtain an integration model more suitable for Chinese poems and paintings.The last part is an exploration of the modes and ways of representing the modes in the multimodal metaphors of "bamboo" theme paintings.By analyzing the source domain and target domain of "bamboo" theme paintings,four representational modesare obtained,which are image,text,image and text,implication.Of which most of the source fields are image and text modes.Due to the ideographic characteristics of ancient Chinese paintings,implicit representational modes are common in "bamboo" theme paintings.Five types of multimodal metaphorical representations of "bamboo" theme paintings are further summarized.The cognitive rationale and influencing factors behind the representations are analyzed.
