Since Plato, the relationship between poetic and virtue in literature has always been the focus of western literary theory. With the development of Western literature to the postmodern stage, the writing of evil has become a prominent feature, and its writing form clearly shows the attitudes of different authors and novels towards both poetic and virtue.Undoubtedly, the writing of evil in western postmodern novels contains rich aesthetic pleasure and profound moral enlightenment, both of which are worth exploring. The paper is divided into five parts. The content of each part is arranged as follows:The introduction part introduces the reasons of topic selections, the significance of research and the current research situation. The first chapter mainly sorts out the two concepts of “poetic” and “virtue” in the theoretical level of literature, and analyzes the reasons why evil becomes an aesthetic object. The poetic in literature is mainly at the level of form, that is,the level of “literariness” brought to people's aesthetic feelings by the writing method, skill and structure of literature. The virtue in literature is mainly at the content level, which means that the literary content carries the meaning of truth and goodness to readers. For the exploration of evil we mainly use the combination of motivation theory and result theory.Evil is judged not only according to the expected effects of behavioral motivation on the actor and the people around, but also according to the actual effect of such actions, and the relationship between evil and ugliness is further discussed. The second chapter mainly discusses the writing theme and form characteristics of evil in western postmodern novels,as well as the social and cultural background of evil writing.Evil is divided into evil of sex, evil of drug abuse, evil of violence and evil of political system.Evil writings are written mostly in objective narrative, black humor, collage and other writing forms. On the basis of the second chapter, the third chapter analyzes the writing of evil from the perspective of poetic and virtue. In terms of the relationship between poeticand virtue, the writing of evil in western postmodern novels can be divided into two categories: writing that lacks both poetic and virtue, and writing that is full of poetic but lacking virtue. As far as the value orientation of literature is concerned, the writing of evil needs to be examined through the dialectical relationship between poetic and virtue. The writing of evil in postmodern novels also need the appeal of virtue. The epilogue summarizes the main content of this paper and expresses the value and aesthetic expectation of writing of evil in literature.
