This is a translation report on Shame Nation: The Global Epidemic of Online Hate. The book deeply analyzes the phenomenon of cyber violence and offers practical guidance and advice on how to prevent and protect against cyberbullying. The acclaimed Internet safety expert Sue Scheff and freelance journalist Melissa Schorr unveil all sides of cyber violence in case study, with the combination of the expertise of other professionals in the fields including law, psychology, and reputation management. The source text of this report is an excerpt from Chapter Six Digital Wisdom is Digital Survival, and it focuses on sharing practical means for avoiding virtual cruelty and how the readers react effectively when it occurs. The source text adopts many Internet buzzwords and terminology, and cites some real cases of online violence which occurred in the virtual world as examples,it conveys a large number of objective facts to the readers as well,so it could be categorized as informative text. The translator decides on Peter Newmark's Communicative and Semantic translation as the guiding theory in this translation project.Newmark presents that the informative text should be translated on the basis of readers' understanding and acceptance. His Communicative translation emphasizes the target readers' cultural background and hopes to convey the source language under the consideration of target language's style, while the Semantic translation emphasizes the author's view and focuses on how to render the source text accurately and keep its original cultural style and language format.During the process of translation, the translator combines these two theories, especially for some terminologies such as the names of some newest applications, software, websites and Internet companies, some Internet buzzwords and the complex sentences,in the hope of improving the accuracy and fluency of the translation.Lastly, the translator analyzes carefully the features of the source text and exemplifies how to overcome the difficulties in translation at the lexical, syntactic and textual levels, under the classifications of different translation methods and skills. With the practice of this project, the translator looks forward to accumulating the translation experience and enhancing the ability in applying various translation skills.
